Vance secured a slim lead over Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan in the first general election poll of the race.<\/p>\n<p>The USA Today Network Ohio-Suffolk University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suffolk.edu\/-\/media\/suffolk\/documents\/academics\/research-at-suffolk\/suprc\/polls\/other-states\/2022\/6_01_2022_embargoed_marginals_part_1.pdf?la=en&#038;hash=66D1F4CB3D702841993E21215532815ACD11E1B6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poll<\/a> showed Vance with a lead of just over two points with 41.6% of the vote. Ryan was close behind with 39.4%, while 16.8% were undecided.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOhioans are not going to send a career politician like Tim Ryan, who has voted for every Joe Biden policy that is crushing families when they fill up their cars or even buy groceries,\u201d Taylor Van Kirk, a spokesperson for Vance\u2019s campaign, told The Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement. \u201cJD Vance will be the next Senator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan had a slightly better favorability rating and a much lower unfavorability rating than Vance. However, 61% of respondents had \u201cnever heard\u201d of Ryan, compared to 49% for Vance.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump, who endorsed Vance in the GOP primary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2020-election\/results\/ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won<\/a> Ohio by 8 points in 2020. His endorsement of Vance breathed new life into his campaign, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/03\/jd-vance-wins-ohio-senate-primary-tim-ryan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launching him into the lead<\/a> after previously struggling in the polls.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7441137\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7441137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">U.S. Rep. He has said he <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/06\/jd-vance-donald-trump-elections-2022-ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regrets<\/a> his past statements and vote. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/02\/tim-ryan-masks-ohio-senate-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018MASKS SUCK\u2019: Dem Senate Candidate Shreds Biden\u2019s Agenda)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike a lot of people, I criticized Trump back in 2016,\u201d Vance\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/news\/jd-vance-asks-voters-not-to-judge-me-for-tweets-critical-of-trump-i-regret-being-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in July. \u201cAnd I ask folks not to judge me based on what I said in 2016, because I\u2019ve been very open that I did say those critical things and I regret them, and I regret being wrong about the guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan, a moderate Democrat, has sought to portray Vance as having <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimRyan\/status\/1528734548216930306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abandoned<\/a> \u201cOhio for San Francisco\u201d while employed by Peter Thiel-owned Mithril Capital. He also released an ad <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/29\/tim-ryan-china-ad-ohio-senate-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dedicated to attacking China<\/a>, which received criticism from some Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the poll, The Washington Post\u2019s Paul Kane <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pkcapitol\/status\/1531830391379791879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is unlikely to put effort into attempting to win the seat, as it does not plan to go after \u201creach\u201d states amid a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/08\/red-wave-school-boards-oklahoma-wisconsin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potential red wave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The poll surveyed 500 likely Ohio midterm voters between May 22-24 and has a margin of error of 4%.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives for Vance and Ryan did not immediately respond to TheDCNF\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
