The vehicle carrying the launchers can also travel at more than 50 miles per hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new weapons system that the U.S. is sending Ukraine comes after the administration sent them 90 155 mm M777 towed howitzers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re already seeing the Ukrainians being willing to go on the counteroffensive in the Donbas [region of Ukraine]. They are taking back some towns that the Russians have taken in the past,\u201d a senior Defense Department official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/3032926\/howitzers-proving-very-effective-against-russians-dod-official-says\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe do believe that the howitzers \u2026 are having an impact, particularly in Kharkiv. Now is that the only reason? I don\u2019t think we would go that far to say that, but we do believe that the systems they\u2019re getting \u2014 not just the U.S. systems but the systems from other countries \u2014 are absolutely helping them regain some momentum and to take back some territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/23\/world\/europe\/us-ukraine-howitzers.html\">reported<\/a> that the American-made M777 howitzers \u201care the most powerful and destructive of the many types now being provided by NATO countries\u201d to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey fire three miles farther than the most common artillery system used by the Russian army in the Ukraine war, the Msta-S self-propelled howitzer \u2014 and 10 miles farther if shooting a precision, GPS-guided projectile,\u201d the report said. \u201cSince their deployment two weeks ago, the dozen or so howitzers operating in two artillery batteries had by Sunday fired 1,876 rounds.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. will reportedly send Ukraine the most advanced weapons system that it has supplied to the Eastern European country through its first three months of war with Russia.
