Many times, the suspects are in stolen cars.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriffs in Pierce, Snohomish, and Chelan counties say the problem is rampant. The Washington State Patrol says troopers encountered nearly 1,000 instances of suspects refusing to pull over, according to the Northwest News Network. Lakewood PD experiences daily refusals to pull over.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to House Bill 1054, passed by Democrats in Olympia, criminals can ignore police without fear that they\u2019ll be pursued. Who could have seen this coming? The law enforcement members, nonpartisan policing experts, and Republican lawmakers who warned us this would occur.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/3311905\/rantz-equity-policy-seattle-police-traffic-stops-car-theft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rantz: New equity policy bars Seattle Police from some traffic stops, opens door to more car theft<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Democrats emboldened criminals<\/h3>\n<p>House Bill 1054, passed by Democrats in Olympia, \u201creimagined policing\u201d in ways that emboldened criminals. Thanks to a near-total ban on police pursuits, suspects can ignore police without fear that they\u2019ll be chased.<\/p>\n<p>The only time police can pursue a vehicle is if they suspect impaired driving or have established probable cause, a much higher standard than reasonable suspicion, that the driver committed a violent crime, sex offense, or are an escaped felon. In cases where this standard is met, they must still determine whether a chase outweighs the risk to the public should their pursuit cause an accident.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t take long for this bill to impact a criminal\u2019s behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The state has seen a rash of quick smash-and-grab robberies where criminals can be in-and-out in minutes. ATMs are being stolen and pot shops are being robbed. Thanks to dangerously low police staffing, officers may not be able to respond to catch a criminal in the act. And if they see someone they reasonably suspect of theft driving off, they can\u2019t pursue them.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/news\/crime\/car-thefts-skyrocketing-across-washington-covid-state-supreme-court-decisions\/281-c58d8a71-3970-4ba3-bc1f-6ce784b66ecb#:~:text=There%20have%20been%20176%20cars,of%20fewer%20than%20100%2C000%20people.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statewide surge<\/a> in car theft. Since it\u2019s not a violent crime, stolen cars cannot be pursued under state law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe this is the first time we have ever topped 4,000 stolen vehicles per month,\u201d said Steve Strachan, executive director of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/news\/crime\/car-thefts-skyrocketing-across-washington-covid-state-supreme-court-decisions\/281-c58d8a71-3970-4ba3-bc1f-6ce784b66ecb#:~:text=There%20have%20been%20176%20cars,of%20fewer%20than%20100%2C000%20people.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KING 5<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Suspects won\u2019t pull over<\/h3>\n<p>What\u2019s most troubling is that criminal suspects, often in stolen cars, refuse to pull over for law enforcement. If they speed to avoid the police, they cannot be pursued under most circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn one weekend [in April], we had 23 people not stop,\u201d Pierce County Sherrif Ed Troyer tells the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH. \u201cAnd that\u2019s with [deputies] not stopping nearly as many vehicles as in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chelan County Sheriff Brian Barnett confirmed \u201cit\u2019s happening a lot,\u201d pointing to the 4,000 stolen cars per month report from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs. He calls the situation \u201cdire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Snohomish County, it\u2019s a daily occurrence, according to Sheriff Adam Fortney. It\u2019s gotten so bad that the Snohomish County Sheriff\u2019s Office is implementing a new process to track these instances to help highlight the problem for lawmakers. He calls it an \u201cepidemic\u201d that he says is directly related to the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPretty much every day [suspects refuse to pull over], and I\u2019m not exaggerating that,\u201d Fortney explained to the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH. \u201cIt\u2019s not even about the pursuit. It\u2019s about giving the crooks a free pass to commit crimes and drive away from the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/3338950\/rantz-seattle-area-school-district-showed-anti-cop-blm-video-for-black-history-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rantz: Seattle-area school district showed anti-cop BLM video for Black History Month<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Democrat leadership refuses to do anything<\/h3>\n<p>During the last legislative session, there was bipartisan agreement that Democrats erred in passing House Bill 1054.<\/p>\n<p>A near-blanket ban on pursuits was clearly the wrong choice. It prompted lawmakers to amend the law, but Senate Democrat leaders allowed it to fail before the end of the session. They wouldn\u2019t bring it up for a final vote.<\/p>\n<p>It failed thanks to the pressure of Rep. Jesse Johnson (D-Federal Way), one of the chief architects of the bills reimagining policing in Washington state. A fierce critic of cops, Johnson claimed there were no problems with the bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/washington-police-say-drivers-arent-stopping-for-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claiming<\/a> he does \u201cnot believe pursuits in a 21st-century policing system are needed.\u201d But his understanding of policing doesn\u2019t extend past what he watches on MSNBC.<\/p>\n<p>With police departments understaffed, agencies don\u2019t have enough detectives to put onto cases of stolen vehicles and other misdemeanor crimes. They can\u2019t even handle the backlog of felony crimes.
