The biggest change for me is that I&#8217;m happy.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bXbKfcpZ2o\">pic.twitter.com\/bXbKfcpZ2o<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryMargOlohan\/status\/1531639466946871296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 31, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophomore year, I had my best times competing with the men, I was miserable, and so having that be lifted is incredibly relieving and allows me to put my all into training, into racing,\u201d Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrans people don\u2019t transition for athletics, we transition to be happy and authentic and our true selves,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cTransitioning to get an advantage is not something that ever factors into our decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t transition to win more medals?\u201d asked ABC reporter Juju Chang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d responded Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Chang pointed out that many of Thomas\u2019s teammates signed an anonymous letter saying that they support the biological male athlete\u2019s right to transition but believe that it is unfair for Thomas to compete against biological women in sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t go halfway and be like, I support trans women and trans people but only to a certain point,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cIf \u00a0you support trans women as women, and they\u2019ve met all the NCAA requirements, then I don\u2019t know if you can really say something like that. Trans women are not a threat to women\u2019s sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chang also interviewed Dr. Michael Joyner, a medical expert with the Mayo Clinic, asking whether \u201cyears of hormone therapy cannot put trans women in a place to compete with cisgender women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that the evidence so far would suggest that period of a year, two years, three years, four years, is probably insufficient,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8\ud83d\udea8<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JujuChangABC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JujuChangABC<\/a>: &#8220;Are you saying that years of hormone therapy cannot put trans women in a place to compete with cisgender women? <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Michael Joyner: &#8220;I think that the evidence so far would suggest that period of a year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, is probably insufficient.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R0kHHXyeN4\">pic.twitter.com\/R0kHHXyeN4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryMargOlohan\/status\/1531640976313303040?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 31, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chang also asked Thomas about the \u201clegacy effects of testosterone\u201d and whether biologically male athletes can ever truly eliminate all testosterone that is giving them advantages over women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShould that eliminate or disqualify transgender women?\u201d Chang asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a medical expert but there is a lot of variation among cis female athletes,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cThere are cis women who are very tall and very muscular and have more testosterone than another cis woman.
