Kosinski explained during an interview with Polygon that Cruise \u201creally didn\u2019t want to make\u201d a sequel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I read the script, I had some ideas, and Jerry [Bruckheimer] liked those ideas. He said, \u2018You know what, you gotta go pitch this to Tom directly,\u2019\u201d the director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23138035\/top-gun-maverick-director-interview\">told<\/a> Polygon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe flew to Paris, where Tom was shooting \u2018Mission: Impossible,\u2019 we got about a half-hour of his time between setups,\u201d Kosinski continued. \u201cAnd I basically had 30 minutes to pitch this film, which I didn\u2019t realize when we were flying over. But when I got there, I found that Tom really didn\u2019t want to make another \u2018Top Gun.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cIt\u2019s one of those moments as a director, you have one on every film, where you\u2019re on the spot to make a case for why this movie should be made. I had 30 minutes to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the director delivered his pitch, Cruise immediately called the head of Paramount Pictures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re making another \u2018Top Gun,\u2019\u201d Cruise told the exec, according to Kosinski.<\/p>\n<p>The director recalled thinking how it was \u201cpretty impressive to see the power of a real movie star in that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those instincts were good ones. After prolonged pandemic-related delays, \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d premiered in time for Memorial Day weekend 2022 and is already a huge success. The movie now holds the record for the top Memorial Day opening of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Cruise had previously promised the movie would \u201cnever\u201d be released on a streaming service before a theatrical release, which is why the premiere was pushed back for years.<\/p>\n<p>During the Polygon interview, Kosinski also discussed why the sequel had the title \u201cTop Gun: Maverick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just had the title, you know, which I think kind of summed it all up,\u201d he told the publication. \u201cWe aren\u2019t going to call it \u2018Top Gun 2,\u2019 we\u2019re going to call it \u2018Top Gun: Maverick.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the movie is a \u201ccharacter-driven story, a drama with this giant action film around it.
