Brian Kemp\u2019s primary win over a Trump-backed challenger should concern Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, election analysts told The Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHe\u2019s going to have something of a halo effect beating Trump\u2019s handpicked candidate,\u201d J. Miles Coleman, associate editor of Sabato\u2019s Crystal Ball, told TheDCNF. \u201cI think that\u2019s going to play well with maybe some of these voters in the Atlanta suburbs.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>There isn\u2019t any evidence former President Donald Trump\u2019s base will choose to stay home in the general election, despite their frustration with Kemp, Lakshya Jain, an election analyst who writes for Split Ticket, told TheDCNF.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams should be concerned about her odds of winning Georgia\u2019s gubernatorial election after incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp won his primary by a huge margin, election analysts told The Daily Caller News Foundation, and will struggle to match her 2018 performance.<\/p>\n<p>Kemp\u2019s massive victory in the primary showed he has a good shot at winning over suburban voters, while high primary turnout undercuts Abrams\u2019 voter suppression rallying cry, J. Miles Coleman, associate editor of Sabato\u2019s Crystal Ball, told TheDCNF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Kemp\u2019s] going to have something of a halo effect beating Trump\u2019s handpicked candidate,\u201d Coleman said. \u201cAnd I think that\u2019s going to play well with maybe some of these voters in the Atlanta suburbs who maybe used to be Republicans but don\u2019t like Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kemp <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/24\/brian-kemp-wins-georgia-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sailed to victory<\/a> against former Republican Sen. David Perdue, who had the backing of former President Donald Trump. The governor had led in the polls but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/governor\/ga\/georgia_governor_republican_primary-7402.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overperformed<\/a> on election night, winning by over 50 points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to be a tough situation for Abrams,\u201d he said. \u201cAt this point, I would probably say she does worse this year than she did in 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lakshya Jain, an election analyst who writes for Split Ticket, told TheDCNF the governor\u2019s policies, such as his suspension of the gas tax, have made Kemp fairly popular in the state. He argued it is \u201cvery difficult to ask voters to fire someone that, by and large, they\u2019re overall happy with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jain said he didn\u2019t see \u201cany evidence\u201d Trump supporters were willing to stay home on election day, despite their anger with Kemp over his refusal to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7439989\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7439989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Georgia Gov. (Photo by Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cPeople who are the most ideological and upset with the nominee typically tend to have very high turnout scores anyways,\u201d Jain said. \u201cIf you\u2019re Stacey Abrams and you see that Kemp, number one, does fine with the \u2026 rural white base vote, and number two, that he\u2019s pulling pretty good margins in the Atlanta suburbs, you start to worry because your path to victory is closed off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abrams is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/governor\/ga\/georgia_governor_kemp_vs_abrams-7538.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polling<\/a> about 5 points behind Kemp, according to RealClearPolitics\u2019 average. Jain previously told TheDCNF that Democratic Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, who is up for reelection in November, has a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/04\/raphael-warnock-stacey-abrams-herschel-walker-brian-kemp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">better chance<\/a> of winning than Abrams, in part because he is seen as less of a national figure and more moderate.<\/p>\n<p>Coleman said it would be smart for Abrams to move toward the center and focus on issues other than voter suppression as she enters the general election campaign. He argued the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/24\/stacey-abrams-georgia-governor-voter-turnout-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increased turnout<\/a> in the state\u2019s primary would make it difficult for Abrams to rally Georgians with a message about voting access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just one of those issues that\u2019s very close to the heart of the Democratic base,\u201d Coleman said. \u201cI can still see her mentioning it, but maybe in different terms.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/28\/ron-desantis-brian-kemp-donald-trump-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: What Does Brian Kemp\u2019s Victory Mean For Ron DeSantis?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Should Abrams lose the gubernatorial race, it will be her second defeat to Kemp in four years. Coleman, however, said he doesn\u2019t believe such an outcome would necessarily prevent Abrams from a future in politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think two statewide losses is necessarily career-killing,\u201d he said. \u201cI would say that she could potentially set her sights on maybe a congressional seat or something \u2026 down the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged, however, that it\u2019s an \u201copen secret\u201d Abrams is determined to be the governor of Georgia and could be reluctant to set her sights on anything else.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives for Abrams and Kemp did not respond to TheDCNF\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
