Ilhan Omar blamed media bias for \u201cIslamophobia\u201d in the U.S. in a Saturday \u201cWelcome Address\u201d to an organization repeatedly accused of having ties to Islamic terrorist organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Omar participated in the Islamic Circle of North America\u2019s (ICNA) ICNA-MAS Convention, a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/icna\/status\/1527735563784273920\">conference<\/a> which also featured Minnesota Attorney General and former Democratic National Committee deputy chairman Keith Ellison. In a 26-minute speech, the congresswoman complained that American media is biased towards Muslims, and that coverage is not representative of either the American Muslim community or Muslims worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a single Wikipedia page that you can open about a Muslim leader, in the U.S. and abroad, where you will not read something so atrocious that you do not want to associate yourself with them. It doesn\u2019t matter which article you read about this convention, every single Muslim convention, about me, every other leader, you will be shocked to see what people are saying about us, and how we actually see ourselves,\u201d Omar said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think about why that is. Because often times we have allowed people to develop a narrative about who we are, what our faith stands for, and how we should show up in society. And that, I think, is injustice that we have done, to ourselves and our community and to our faith. Because, as they say, the day belongs to those who show up.\u201d \u201cAnd if you are not, as the saying goes, many politicians use this, \u2018if you are not at the table, you are on the menu.\u2019 So when we, as Muslims, are not in those newsrooms, shaping the narrative and telling our own story of who we are, someone else is,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>Bipartisan elected officials and organizations have frequently criticized Omar for anti-Semitic remarks alleging Jewish control of the American political process. In 2012, she <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/01\/22\/ilhan-omar-anti-semitic-trope-2012-israel-hypnotized-comments\/\">accused<\/a> Israel of \u201chypnotiz[ing] the world,\u201d and in 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/03\/02\/ilhan-omar-israel-anti-semitism-palestine\/\">claimed<\/a> that people in the U.S. are \u201cpush[ing] for allegiance to a foreign country.\u201d Omar and her allies <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/10\/ilhan-omar-reaction-squad-antisemitism-pressley-ocasio-cortez-tlaib-anti-blackness\/\">accused<\/a> fellow Democrats of \u201canti-Blackness and Islamophobia\u201d for criticizing her for equating the U.S. and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/21\/ilhan-omar-israel-anti-semitism-democrats-taliban-hamas-september-11\/\"><strong>(RELATED: The Anatomy Of An Ilhan Omar Scandal: From \u2018Some People Did Something\u2019 To Comparing The US To Hamas)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A native of Somalia who immigrated to the U.S. when she was a child, Omar went on to claim that negative portrayals of the country are not wholly accurate. Somalia has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world. Sexual assault rates <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/08\/1097142\">rose<\/a> in the country nearly 80% in 2020, the UN found, although researchers often struggle to collect data. Female genital mutilation remains \u201calmost universal\u201d in Somalia, <a href=\"https:\/\/somalia.unfpa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/pub-pdf\/Gender-Based%20Violence%20in%20Somalia%20-%20V3%20-%20Digital.pdf\">according<\/a> to the UN.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to the congresswoman, emphasizing the rates of gender-based violence is part of \u201cthe danger of the single narrative,\u201d since that was not her experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandfather and father raised my siblings, brothers and sisters, raised my aunts and uncles, as complete equals. I would actually be shocked when people would say, \u2018this is a role for your brother and this is a role for you guys,\u2019 because that wasn\u2019t the case in our household. And I remember the first time I told the story about how in our household, everybody did everything together. (AAMIR QURESHI\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Although Omar promoted a more egalitarian vision in her speech, ICNA is known for <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/12\/05\/shooters-mother-active-in-us-branch-of-pro-caliphate-islamic-group\/\">segregating<\/a> by sex during events, and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docdroid.net\/fc26Dof\/icnasales-letter-pdf#page=2\">accused<\/a> by members of Congress and academics of being an arm of Jamaat-e-Islami, a Pakistani organization with arms in several South Asian countries. ICNA has also promoted the Muslim Brotherhood, and hosted terrorist imam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/30\/magazine\/the-lessons-of-anwar-al-awlaki.html\">Anwar Al-Awlaki<\/a> for at least one event in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Accusations against ICNA of having ties to terrorist organizations have been bipartisan. Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley and Democratic Montana Sen. Max Baucus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finance.senate.gov\/chairmans-news\/records-sought-about-tax-exempt-organizations-for-committees-terror-finance-probe\">listed<\/a> the organization in a 2003 request to the IRS for documents from non-profit organizations with ties to terrorist financing. Republican Indiana Rep. Jim Banks introduced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-resolution\/160\/text\">resolution<\/a> in 2019 noting ICNA Relief\u2019s connection to Jamaat-e-Islami and preventing the U.S. government from funding ICNA.<\/p>\n<p>At least once, ICNA <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201001124155\/https:\/\/www.icna.org\/us-based-charity-announces-establishment-of-rehab-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">partnered<\/a> with Jamaat-e-Islami\u2019s non-profit arm, the Al-Khidmat Welfare Society. The Al-Khidmat Welfare Society has <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20071003065109\/http:\/www.jamaat.org\/news\/2006\/aug\/17\/1001.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funded<\/a> Hamas, while describing the terrorist entity as \u201chelping the Palestinian brethren inside occupied Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar\u2019s office did not respond to the Daily Caller\u2019s request for comment on whether or not she believes that criticism of her or ICNA is due to Islamophobia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic Minnesota Rep.
