At the current trajectory, I expect Covid will be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spread of COVID-19 spiked after family gatherings over Thanksgiving and Christmas, but they\u2019ve been plunging ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Why? \u201cIn large part because natural immunity from prior infection is far more common than can be measured by testing. Testing has been capturing only from 10% to 25% of infections, depending on when during the pandemic someone got the virus. Applying a time-weighted case capture average of 1 in 6.5 to the cumulative 28 million confirmed cases would mean about 55% of Americans have natural immunity,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow add people getting vaccinated. As of this week, 15% of Americans have received the vaccine, and the figure is rising fast. Former Food and Drug Commissioner Scott Gottlieb estimates 250 million doses will have been delivered to some 150 million people by the end of March.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Makary says antibody studies are likely underestimating natural immunity, saying survivors of the 1918 Spanish flu \u201cwere found in 2008 \u2014 90 years later \u2014 to have memory cells still able to produce neutralizing antibodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my own conversations with medical experts, I have noticed that they too often dismiss natural immunity, arguing that we don\u2019t have data. The data certainly doesn\u2019t fit the classic randomized-controlled-trial model of the old-guard medical establishment. There\u2019s no control group. But the observational data is compelling,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have argued for months that we could save more American lives if those with prior Covid-19 infection forgo vaccines until all vulnerable seniors get their first dose. Several studies demonstrate that natural immunity should protect those who had Covid-19 until more vaccines are available. Half my friends in the medical community told me: Good idea. The other half said there isn\u2019t enough data on natural immunity, despite the fact that reinfections have occurred in less than 1% of people\u2014and when they do occur, the cases are mild,\u201d Markary writes.<\/p>\n<p>The director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Rochelle Wallensky, says the U.S. is not near herd immunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[W]e\u2019re not at the place where we believe that the current level of vaccination is what is driving down the current level of disease,\u201d Wallensky said. \u201cWe believe that much of the surge of disease happened related to the holidays, related to travel. And so we believe that now we\u2019re coming down from that. So I would articulate really loudly that if you\u2019re relying on our current level of vaccination rather than the other mitigation efforts to get us to remain low, that we shouldn\u2019t rest in that comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Markary says many scientists are reluctant to publicly acknowledge his conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome medical experts privately agreed with my prediction that there may be very little Covid-19 by April but suggested that I not to talk publicly about herd immunity because people might become complacent and fail to take precautions or might decline the vaccine. But scientists shouldn\u2019t try to manipulate the public by hiding the truth. As we encourage everyone to get a vaccine, we also need to reopen schools and society to limit the damage of closures and prolonged isolation.
