Thomas Massie (R-KY) advocated for his Safe Students Act \u2014 a piece of legislation that would repeal the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Safe Students Act\u2019 would make it easier for state and local governments and school boards to unambiguously set their own firearms policies,\u201d Massie <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/1529601121911808002\">argued<\/a> on Twitter last week.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation \u2014 originally introduced by former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) in 2007 \u2014 would end the Gun-Free School Zones Act, which bans individuals from knowingly possessing firearms in a school zone, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/massie.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=395446\">press release<\/a> from Massie\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGun-free zones are ineffective and make our schools less safe. Since 1950, 98 percent of mass public shootings have occurred in places where citizens are banned from having guns,\u201d Massie said in the press release. \u201cBanks, churches, sports stadiums, and many of my colleagues in Congress are protected with firearms. Yet children inside the classroom are too frequently left vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Massie\u2019s proposal follows a deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where a solo gunman killed 19 children and two teachers. The school is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/05\/25\/uvalde-shooting-laws\/\">subject<\/a> to the Gun-Free School Zones Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGun Free School Zones are a lie,\u201d Dudley Brown, President of National Association for Gun Rights, said about the Safe Students Act. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t make guns magically disappear. They only make criminals out of the people who would protect our children. Repealing this ludicrous federal law would put criminals on notice that they can\u2019t commit heinous acts in schools with impunity any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Massie accompanies other Republicans in supporting Second Amendment rights while seeking to address security concerns at schools. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ted-cruz-gives-fiery-defense-of-second-amendment-were-not-responding-to-tragedy-by-giving-up-rights\">said<\/a>\u00a0over the weekend, for example, that \u201cit\u2019s far easier to slander one\u2019s political adversaries and to demand that responsible citizens forfeit their constitutional rights than it is to examine the cultural sickness giving birth to unspeakable acts of evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking guns away from these responsible Americans will not make them safer, nor will it make our nation more secure,\u201d Cruz continued. \u201cIn an age where elites embrace defunding the police, when homelessness runs rampant, when gangs dominate entire communities, and when radical district attorneys refuse to prosecute violent crime in cities across America, rarely has the Second Amendment been more necessary to secure the rights of our fellow citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/its-just-sick-biden-uses-school-shooting-address-to-slam-gun-lobby\">pinned<\/a> the Uvalde attack on the \u201cgun lobby\u201d and demanded that something be done about \u201cassault weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a nation, we have to ask when in God\u2019s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God\u2019s name [are we going to] do what we all know in our gut needs to be done?\u201d he asked. \u201cWhy are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen? Where in God\u2019s name is our backbone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Democrats made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrats-pounce-on-texas-school-shooting-demand-taking-away-constitutional-rights\">similar remarks<\/a> in the wake of the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no such thing as being \u2018pro-life\u2019 while supporting laws that let children be shot in their schools, elders in grocery stores, worshippers in their houses of faith, survivors by abusers, or anyone in a crowded place,\u201d Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) argued. \u201cIt is an idolatry of violence. And it must end.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
