We proposed to invest to help provinces and territories put restrictions on handguns within their jurisdictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, in our discussions with law enforcement advocates and experts, it became apparent that we needed a different solution,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019re introducing legislation to implement a national freeze on handgun ownership. What this means is that it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada. In other words, we\u2019re capping the market for handguns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/sep\/20\/justin-trudeau-canada-tries-to-shift-focus-from-blackface-images-to-gun-control\">used<\/a> efforts to implement new gun control measures to distract from his blackface <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/canada-us-canada-elections-trudeau-strat-idCAKBN1WI0WZ-OCADN\">scandal<\/a> in which photos emerged that showed him on multiple occasions wearing racist blackface.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau\u2019s remarks come after Democrat President Joe Biden appeared to take aim at handguns on Monday, claiming that a 9mm bullet, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guns.com\/news\/2019\/06\/25\/top-5-most-popular-calibers-for-handguns\">most<\/a> popular handgun caliber, \u201cblows the lung out of the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said a .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out \u2014 may be able to get it and save the life. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body,\u201d Biden claimed. \u201cSo, the idea of these high-caliber weapons is, uh, there\u2019s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self-protection, hunting.
