Protests over the arrest that night turned violent as a Democratic State Senator Tim Carpenter was beaten and another historic monument called \u201cForward\u201d was torn down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel3000.com\/protesters-explain-why-they-tore-down-statues-at-state-capitol\/\">phrase<\/a> \u201cBlack is Beautiful\u201d was spray-painted on the base of Heg\u2019s statue, a Union soldier who supported abolition. The statue\u2019s head was lost while the body was thrown into a nearby lake but later recovered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A restored statue of the Norwegian immigrant turned Civil War colonel was commissioned and placed back in front of the capitol building, according to The Wisconsin State Journal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to think about the story of Heg and look at that statue through a different and wider lens,\u201d Christopher Kolakowski, director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum said at the ceremony. \u201cHans Heg is an exemplar for Norwegians in the Norwegian community for sure, but he represents much more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Heg\u2019s descendants, Lori Coffey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc15.com\/2022\/05\/30\/colonel-heg-descendants-re-dedicate-civil-war-hero-statue-people-wisconsin\/\">told<\/a> NBC15 that she was surprised to hear the news of the original statue being pulled down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went, \u2018Oh my gosh!\u2019 And my heart sank. I thought, \u2018Why?\u2019\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cAnd then I thought, \u2018What would Colonel Heg do?\u2019 I know I want to be angry but that\u2019s not what he would\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several groups, including the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, took part in the ceremony.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During his Civil War service, Heg, who supported the abolition of slavery, took part in battles at Murfreesboro, Perryville, and Island No. 10 before dying of wounds sustained at Chickamauga. Visitors to Chickamauga can see a monument at the location where he was shot.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may be a widow,\u201d he wrote to his wife during the war, \u201cbut you will never be the widow of a coward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/toppling-history\">identical statue<\/a> of Heg is in Norway, Wisconsin, where he lived prior to enlisting in the army and is buried at a Lutheran Evangelical Church. Another can be found in his birthplace of Lier, Norway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin man Rodney A.
