Americans are thus paying nearly 11% more than the $4.18 prices that prevailed a month ago \u2014 as well as 53% higher than the $3.03 prices from Memorial Day last year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=pet&#038;s=emm_epmr_pte_nus_dpg&#038;f=w\">U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst a backdrop of gas prices that have continued to set new records ahead of Memorial Day, Americans have been resilient in their desire to hit the road, but we\u2019re certainly seeing increased hesitancy due to rising prices at the pump,\u201d Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/19\/gas-prices-just-hit-a-new-record-high-here-are-a-few-ways-to-save.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gas prices for Memorial Day 2022 are even more severe than those seen in recent memory. Americans were paying $1.96 on Memorial Day 2020 when driving activity was still depressed due to COVID-19 lockdowns \u2014 meaning that Americans are paying 136% more for gas than they were two years ago. Even before the lockdowns, gas prices were roughly $2.85 on Memorial Day 2019 \u2014 meaning that today\u2019s prices are 62% higher than equivalent pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/gas-prices-66-americans-are-making-significant-habit-changes-says-survey-180821426.html\">poll from Yahoo<\/a> released earlier this month showed that 66% of American drivers would make \u201csignificant changes to their driving patterns\u201d if the national average cost of gasoline lies between $4.12 and $4.35 per gallon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started riding my motorcycle as my main mode of transportation, instead of just recreationally,\u201d Alexis Hornickel of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/i-have-a-very-limited-budget-americans-forced-to-drive-less-as-gas-prices-soar\">The Daily Wire<\/a> last week. \u201cI\u2019m a student, so I have a very limited budget. My gas expenses just weren\u2019t justifiable anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poll likewise showed that 62% of Americans are willing to limit their vehicle usage to necessities \u2014 such as doctor visits and grocery shopping \u2014 if the price of gasoline hits $4.35 per gallon. While 41% plan to only fill their gas tanks with what is affordable, 35% are increasing their reliance on public transportation and 29% are canceling summer road trips.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration \u2014 which has nixed expansions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/peter-doocy-asks-for-a-straight-answer-on-keystone-gets-the-runaround-from-jen-psaki\">Keystone XL Pipeline<\/a> and dragged its feet on issuing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/unacceptable-cruz-gop-senators-demand-end-to-oil-and-gas-lease-permit-delays\">oil and gas permits<\/a> \u2014 claims that higher fuel costs may help the United States transition more quickly to renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about \u201cenormously high gas prices\u201d at a press conference last week, President Joe Biden said: \u201cWhen it comes to the gas prices, we\u2019re going through an incredible transition that is taking place that, God willing, when it\u2019s over, we\u2019ll be stronger and the world will be stronger and less reliant on fossil fuels when this is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden also pointed to his decisions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-raid-on-critical-strategic-petroleum-reserve-leaves-lowest-level-in-35-years\">release millions of barrels<\/a> from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as successful in stopping gas prices from \u201cgetting even worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe price of gas at the pump is something that I told you \u2014 you heard me say before \u2014 it would be a matter of great discussion at my kitchen table when I was a kid growing up. It\u2019s affecting a lot of families,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm contended last week that soaring gas prices are an \u201cexclamation point\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/energy-sec-granholm-soaring-gas-prices-are-an-exclamation-point-that-u-s-must-accelerate-green-energy-push\">transition away from fossil fuels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one has ever weaponized access to the sun,\u201d Granholm said, referencing Russia\u2019s move to cancel energy exports or demand that shipments be paid in Russian rubles. \u201cNo one has ever weaponized access to wind.
