However, a number of destroyers and even cruisers were sold to nations in South America.<\/p>\n<p>This included the\u00a0<em>Brooklyn<\/em>-class cruiser USS\u00a0<em>Phoenix<\/em>, which was sold to Argentina and renamed ARA\u00a0<em>General Belgrano<\/em>. She was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10775363\/We-RIGHT-sink-Belgrano-says-submariner-40-years-Falklands-War-attack.html\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10775363\/We-RIGHT-sink-Belgrano-says-submariner-40-years-Falklands-War-attack.html&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1653837468421000&#038;usg=AOvVaw09Mu5DUkBYYwsFlEzdV6BD\">sunk 40 years ago<\/a>\u00a0during the Falklands War, and until the sinking of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-61103927\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-61103927&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1653837468421000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2yk_fRtP7WrY38XIepC7W-\">Russian warship\u00a0<em>Moskva<\/em><\/a>\u00a0last month,\u00a0<em>General Belgrano\u00a0<\/em>was the largest warship lost in combat since World War II.\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the former USS\u00a0<em>Brooklyn<\/em>\u00a0renamed\u00a0<em>Bernardo O\u2019Higgins<\/em>\u00a0in honor of one of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyireland.com\/18th-19th-century-history\/bernardo-ohiggins-rebel-son-of-an-irish-viceroy\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.historyireland.com\/18th-19th-century-history\/bernardo-ohiggins-rebel-son-of-an-irish-viceroy\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1653837468421000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3Au6aePLhek7PsXETLK_9P\">Chile\u2019s founding fathers<\/a>, served in the Chilean Navy until 1992.\n<\/p>\n<p>The nations of South America clearly put those retired U.S. warships to good use, and soon could have another chance to acquire a few modern vessels at a good price. South America largely lacks the capabilities to build warships and traditionally looked to Europe. That led to a naval arms race in the continent prior to the outbreak of the First World War, while during the Cold War those nations sought to acquire used but reliable retired vessels from the United States, the UK, and France.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Littoral Combat Ship: Heading South?<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>The next group of ships potentially headed south could be the U.S. Navy\u2019s Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), the vessels that were developed during the Global War on Terror (GWOT) to operate in near-shore or littoral waters \u2013 but now seem ill-suited to a conflict with a near-peer adversary such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/05\/japan-is-keeping-a-very-close-eye-on-chinas-aircraft-carrier\/\">China<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/05\/nato-is-planning-a-big-military-drill-to-train-for-a-war-with-russia\/\">Russia<\/a>. With shifting priorities, not to mention the fact that the LCS program failed to deliver on its promised potential, the U.S. Navy has sought to retire up to nine of the small but fast-moving vessels.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of scrapping them, the Navy has proposed giving them to allies and regional partners.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are countries in South America\u2026 that would be able to use these ships that have small crews and so instead of just considering scrapping as the single option, I think there are others that we can look at sir,\u201d Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday said in response to a question from Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), while testifying about the service\u2019s fiscal year 2023 (FY23) budget request to the United States Senate Appropriations Committee,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2022\/05\/gilday-navy-could-offer-retired-littoral-combat-ships-to-south-america\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2022\/05\/gilday-navy-could-offer-retired-littoral-combat-ships-to-south-america\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1653837468422000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2ffxMMBQW3H_04fojUbYG2\">BreakingDefense reported<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Littoral Combat Ship: The Great Donation?\u00a0<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>The warships would be well-suited to operations in the waters around South America, where they could be used to conduct counter-narcotics missions. In October 2021,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southcom.mil\/MEDIA\/NEWS-ARTICLES\/Article\/2825993\/uss-sioux-city-interdicts-over-20-million-worth-of-cocaine\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.southcom.mil\/MEDIA\/NEWS-ARTICLES\/Article\/2825993\/uss-sioux-city-interdicts-over-20-million-worth-of-cocaine\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1653837468422000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3uKaQmdSUISv4xH1FsiIbn\">the U.S. Navy announced<\/a>\u00a0the USS\u00a0<em>Sioux City<\/em>\u00a0seized almost 500 kilograms of suspected cocaine, which the service reported had \u201can estimated street value of over $20.7 million.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>That seizure followed an even larger one from April 2021, when the USS\u00a0<em>Freedom<\/em>\u00a0was deployed in joint anti-drug operations with the U.S. Coast Guard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southcom.mil\/MEDIA\/NEWS-ARTICLES\/Article\/2570419\/uss-freedom-returns-from-final-deployment\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.southcom.mil\/MEDIA\/NEWS-ARTICLES\/Article\/2570419\/uss-freedom-returns-from-final-deployment\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1653837468422000&#038;usg=AOvVaw239TjgjVsCRnfdrXil_Yjp\">off the coast of Mexico<\/a>.
