And knowing they are mortal, he told this year&#8217;s graduates, is how they can find the chance to be truly free.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Autumn: A Graduation Poem<\/strong><br \/><em>(a blank-verse extract from &#8220;Four Seasons,&#8221; the 2022 Phi Beta Kappa poem for Princeton University)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Back in 1970, Saul Kripke,<br \/>Then Princeton&#8217;s great philosopher, observed<br \/>That Phosphorus, the dawning star of morning,<br \/>And Hesperus, the evening star at dusk,<br \/>Are both, in truth, the twilight planet Venus.<br \/>The sentence <em>Phosphorus is Hesperus<\/em><br \/>Is thus a logical necessity,<br \/>Although that took millennia to learn.<\/p>\n<p>And what if many necessary truths<br \/>Are similar\u2014both logical and waiting?<br \/>Think, for instance, of the proposition<br \/>That freedom of the will requires death.<br \/>The logic&#8217;s quick enough: Free will takes change,<br \/>And every change needs something&#8217;s dissolution.<\/p>\n<p>But other consequences may unfold<br \/>In time. The fact that all that lives must die<br \/>Unburdens us and eases small dismay.<br \/>Undoes ambition, greed, the rush of fame.<br \/>Unkindness, too: The price of living long<br \/>Is burying your parents, teachers, friends.<br \/>Be gentle. Everyone you know is dying.<br \/>Be light of touch. Everyone&#8217;s an orphan,<br \/>Soon enough.<br \/><span>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/span>And take what time provides:<br \/>A chance to seek the beautiful and wise,<br \/>To look to God, to live with graceful rites.<br \/>These come with death, like crimson leaves, and some<br \/>Will catch your eye and strike you as they fall.<\/p>\n<p>In ancient Roman triumphs, servants murmured<br \/>To generals and emperors, <em>Remember<\/em><br \/><em>You are mortal<\/em>, lest the cheering crowd<br \/>Fan belief that they had turned to gods.<br \/>Now poets are those servants, come to say,<\/p>\n<p><em>This is your Morning Star\u2014that you must die.<\/em><br \/><em>This is your Evening Star\u2014that you are free.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And Love, like Venus in her transit, marks<br \/>The way.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Bottum is director of the Classics Institute at Dakota State University and poetry editor of the <\/em>New York Sun<em>.
