The FBI used the report to obtain a warrant to dig for the gold, but claims its 2018 excavation turned up nothing. A father-son treasure hunting duo called \u201cFinders Keepers,\u201d however, believes the FBI swooped in and took their treasure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a pattern of behavior by the FBI that\u2019s been very troubling,\u201d Anne Weismann, Finders Keepers\u2019 lawyer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Weird\/wireStory\/treasure-hunters-sue-records-fbis-civil-war-gold-82090314\">said<\/a>\u00a0in January. She questioned whether the agency is \u201cacting in good faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A scientific analysis commissioned by the FBI shortly before agents went digging for buried treasure suggested that a huge quantity of gold was below the surface, according to newly released government documents. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Lk36AWbTTN\">https:\/\/t.co\/Lk36AWbTTN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Yahoo News (@YahooNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YahooNews\/status\/1530533175470043137?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Weismann is suing the FBI on behalf of Dennis and Kem Parada. The study done for the FBI had been reported before, but it was verified by the court-ordered release of the geophysical survey.<\/p>\n<p>The judge in the case <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/judge-orders-fbi-to-turn-over-evidence-regarding-search-for-civil-war-gold\">ordered<\/a> the Justice Department to turn over the records after being stonewalled by the FBI. The FBI has now <a href=\"https:\/\/vault.fbi.gov\/alleged-missing-civil-war-gold-in-dents-run-elk-county-pennsylvania\">posted the records on its website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The father and son believe the gold was part of an 1863 shipment of Union gold that was intended for the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. The gold, if found, has a current\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/treasure-hunters-searching-55-million-025705312.html\">estimated value<\/a>\u00a0of $55 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Paradas have spent years hunting for the legendary gold cache, and eventually led FBI agents to the site, about 135 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, hoping to earn at least a finder\u2019s fee.<\/p>\n<p>Proof of the technical survey data collected by geophysical consulting firm Enviroscan backs up the Paradas\u2019 contention about the site, and appears to have convinced the FBI to excavate in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pennsylvania-oddities-technology-lifestyle-government-and-politics-2c2d2a064fa7f8b3835648821ca3ecbc\">massive, secretive operation<\/a> 2018. The Paradas traveled with the FBI to the site in Dents Run, Pennsylvania, with the FBI. But agents made the Paradas wait in their car while they dug, according to reports. The FBI agents claimed they found nothing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the January\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/21173924-finders-keepers-foia-lawsuit-1-4-2022\">affidavit<\/a>\u00a0filed by Finders Keepers, \u201cA few days after the FBI completed its dig at Dents Run, an off-duty Pennsylvania police officer told the Paradas and Mr. Getler that he had witnessed two \u2018Brinks\u2019 type armored trucks supported by two Humvees and a black SUV with satellite communication antennae.\u201d Other residents also witnessed the vehicles in the area.<\/p>\n<p>John Louie, a geophysics professor at the University of Nevada-Reno, unconnected to the dig, reviewed Enviroscan\u2019s report at the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/civil-war-gold-fbi-pennsylvania-1352e0c3682bc88650a74136dc3c6c74\">request of the Associated Press<\/a> and said the firm\u2019s \u201cmethods were very good,\u201d and \u201ctheir conclusions represent a physically reasonable hypothesis\u201d that gold was buried at the site.
