Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), chair of the House Oversight Committee, has opened an investigation into five U.S. gun manufacturers in the wake of the Texas school shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney sent letters Friday\u00a0ahead of a hearing on gun violence on June 8 to\u00a0Bushmaster Firearms (<a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.oversight.house.gov\/files\/2022-05-26.CBM%20to%20Naegele-Bushmaster%20Firearms%20re%20Gun%20Violence.pdf\">pdf)<\/a>,\u00a0Daniel Defense (<a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.oversight.house.gov\/files\/2022-05-26.CBM%20to%20Daniel-Daniel%20Defense%20re%20Gun%20Violence.pdf\">pdf<\/a>),\u00a0Sig Sauer (<a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.oversight.house.gov\/files\/2022-05-26.CBM%20to%20Cohen-Sig%20Sauer%20re%20Gun%20Violence.pdf\">pdf<\/a>),\u00a0Smith and Wesson (<a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.oversight.house.gov\/files\/2022-05-26.CBM%20to%20Smith-Smith%20and%20Wesson%20Brands%20re%20Gun%20Violence.pdf\">pdf<\/a>), and Ruger (<a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.oversight.house.gov\/files\/2022-05-26.CBM%20to%20Killoy-Sturm%20Ruger%20re%20Gun%20Violence.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) asking for data on how they make, market, and sell semiautomatic rifles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur country faces an epidemic of gun violence, which is now the leading cause of death for children in the United States,\u201d Maloney <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/chairwoman-maloney-launches-investigation-into-manufacturers-of-assault-weapons\">wrote<\/a>, tying guns made by the five companies to mass shootings of the last two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am deeply concerned that gun manufacturers continue to profit from the sale of weapons of war, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-ar-15\">AR-15<\/a>-style assault rifle that a white supremacist used to murder ten people last week in Buffalo, New York, and the AR-15-style assault rifle that was reportedly used this week in the massacre of at least 19 children and two teachers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-uvalde\">Uvalde<\/a>, Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3609228\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/12\/08\/rep-maloney-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3609228\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/12\/08\/rep-maloney-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Rep. (Stefani Reynolds\/Pool via Reuters)<\/figure>\n<p>The Democratic lawmaker from New York accused the manufacturers of \u201creaping a profit\u00a0from the deaths of innocent Americans\u201d by marketing their guns \u201cto civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She asked the companies to reveal their \u201cannual gross revenue and profit\u201d from semiautomatic gun sales since 2012, how much they spend on marketing annually, and how many are sold annually to\u00a0distributors, retailers, consumers, and government agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney said the Uvalde gunman who killed 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School on May 24 used a semiautomatic rifle made by Daniel Defense, which\u00a0markets firearms on its website under the categories of sports use, personal defense use, and professional arms use.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">She also\u00a0<\/span>cited the recent 2022 Buffalo grocery store shooting, the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting, the 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-sandy-hook\">Sandy Hook<\/a> Elementary School shooting, and the 2002 D<span class=\"r-18u37iz\">.C. sniper attacks, among others, as times weapons made by the five manufacturers were linked to mass shootings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The AR-15 style rifle used by the gunman in Uvalde was made by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanielDefense?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DanielDefense<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Las Vegas shooter was also found with four AR-15-style rifles from DD, including one outfitted with a bump stock and 100 round magazine.<\/p>\n<p>As Chair of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OversightDems?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@OversightDems<\/a>, I am investigating them. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Wk83mQX1ML\">https:\/\/t.co\/Wk83mQX1ML<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Carolyn B. Maloney (@RepMaloney) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMaloney\/status\/1530215718129700866?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 27, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Maloney accused the five gun manufacturers of \u201caggressively\u201d marketing their products to the public despite \u201cstrong public support for an assault-weapon ban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Committee respects the rights of law-abiding Americans under the Second Amendment, but that does not excuse irresponsible corporate conduct that fuels deadly gun violence and endangers our children,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times has contacted\u00a0Bushmaster Firearms,\u00a0Daniel Defense,\u00a0Sig Sauer,\u00a0Smith and Wesson, and Ruger for comment.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. gunmaker Remington Arms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/remington-reaches-73-million-settlement-with-sandy-hook-parents_4279448.html\">settled a $73 million lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0by the parents of Sandy Hook victims\u00a0in February. The company argued the shooter was responsible, not the manufacturer. It was the first time a gun manufacturer was held responsible for a shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the parents of the victims argued that if the company didn\u2019t market their guns to young men, their children would still be alive. (Marc Piscotty\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>However, proponents of gun rights argue their constitutional right to bear arms without infringement, under the Second Amendment,\u00a0is an important safeguard from the potential tyranny of government.<\/p>\n<p>This view was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/elon-musk-says-he-strongly-believes-in-second-amendment-suggests-special-permit-be-required-for-assault-rifles_4496714.html\">recently supported<\/a> by the world\u2019s richest man, Telsa and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who said he \u201cstrongly\u201d believed in the right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically, maintaining their power over the people is why those in power did not allow public ownership of guns,\u201d Musk\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/25\/elon-musk-backs-tight-background-checks-for-all-gun-sales-in-wake-of-mass-shooting-in-texas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in an email to CNBC on May 25.<\/p>\n<p>In the same email, Musk elaborated that he supports applying \u201ctight background checks\u201d on all gun purchases, and limits on gun sales to people with special circumstances such as \u201chigh-risk location, like gang warfare,\u201d reported CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>Later, on Twitter, he further revealed his thoughts, advocating for \u201cat minimum\u201d a \u201cspecial permit\u201d to own \u201cassault rifles.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Assault rifles should at minimum require a special permit, where the recipient is extremely well vetted imo<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1529730751964532736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 26, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, a nonprofit government watchdog, replied to Musk\u2019s posts with what he thinks is the point at issue between gun control activists and those advocating for the right to bear arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA gun is a gun is a gun when it comes to those commonly available to civilians. \u2018Assault rifles\u2019 (as gun opponents have broadly defined) are no more\/less deadly than other avail firearms. \u2018Assault rifles\u2019 (full automatic fire kind you likely mean) already banned\/highly restricted,\u201d Fitton\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/TomFitton\/status\/1529932110626267137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn truth, anti-gun activists seek severe restrictions on, and oppose in concept, any individual civilian RIGHT to own ANY firearm, even though it is an inalienable right specifically recognized in the U.S. Constitution under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-second-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second Amendment<\/a>. This is the debate,\u201d Fitton added.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump on Friday also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/trump-defends-gun-rights-calls-for-security-overhaul-at-schools-nationwide-after-uvalde-mass-shooting_4496919.html\">spoke in support of gun rights<\/a>, saying the \u201cexistence of evil\u201d in the world made it important to arm law-abiding citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe existence of evil in our world is not a reason to disarm law-abiding citizens who know how to use their weapons and can protect a lot of people.
