When disputes over the requests arise, the Committee refuses to engage and seeks to punish. There is no presumption of innocence; instead Chairman Bennie Thompson declared citizens who invoke the Fifth Amendment are \u2018part and parcel guilty to what occurred.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans also accused the committee of \u201cescalating its abusive tactics\u201d by \u201csubpoenaing us and three other Republican members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis attempt to coerce information from members of Congress about their official duties is a dangerous abuse of power, serves no legitimate legislative purpose, and eviscerates constitutional norms,\u201d they wrote. \u201cJust because members of Congress are responsible for writing the laws doesn\u2019t give a select few license to subvert them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They also insisted that even if the committee was acting in \u201cgood faith,\u201d they have no \u201crelevant information\u201d that would help in advancing the committee\u2019s purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats know this because we told them in January,\u201d Jordan and McCarthy wrote. \u201cWe told them we can\u2019t attest to Speaker Pelosi\u2019s failure to secure the Capitol in advance of Jan. 6. We can\u2019t elaborate on former U.S. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund\u2019s statement that a concern about \u201coptics\u201d contributed to the limited security response.
