Greg Abbott and other key Republicans cancelled their appearances at the annual National Rifle Association (NRA) Annual Leadership Forum following the Uvalde school shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Abbott canceled his in-person appearance to hold a Friday afternoon news conference in Uvalde, Texas, and will address the convention through a pre-recorded video, spokesperson Mark Miner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2022\/05\/26\/texas-gov-abbott-going-to-uvalde-not-nra-on-friday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Thursday to the Dallas Morning News. He was initially scheduled to speak at 2:37 p.m., right after NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre and before Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem.<\/p>\n<p>The governor held his first press conference in Uvalde on Wednesday, which was briefly derailed by Democratic Texas gubernatorial candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/25\/sick-son-of-a-bitch-beto-orourke-derails-greg-abbott-press-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beto O\u2019Rourke<\/a>. The gubernatorial candidate <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criticized<\/a> Abbott outside of the conference for his plan to speak at the convention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s scheduled to speak at the NRA convention this Friday in Houston, Texas, just days after these kids were slaughtered right here in Uvalde,\u201d O\u2019Rourke told reporters. \u201cAfter they were slaughtered at Santa Fe High School, at Sutherland Springs, in Midland Odessa, in El Paso, Texas. Five of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history right here in this state in the last five years, he was governor for every single one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican Lt Gov. Dan Patrick cancelled his scheduled appearance Friday in order to \u201cfocus on the families\u201d of the victims. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/25\/abbott-bashes-gun-reform-says-chicago-efforts-have-proven-ineffective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Abbott Bashes Gun Reform, Says Chicago Efforts Have Proven Ineffective)<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter prayerful consideration and discussion with NRA officials, I have decided not to speak at the NRA breakfast this morning,\u201d Patrick announced in a Friday statement. \u201cWhile a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and an NRA member, I would not want my appearance today to bring any additional pain or grief to the families and to all those suffering in Uvalde. Gospel singer Larry Gatlin and country singer Larry Stewart also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2022\/05\/26\/nra-convention-don-mclean-cancels-performance-after-texas-shooting\/9940169002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pulled out<\/a> from their scheduled performances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have decided it would be disrespectful and hurtful for me to perform,\u201d McLean\u00a0said in a Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/don-mclean-pulls-texas-gun-095945915.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m sure all the folks planning to attend this event are shocked and sickened by these events as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NRA <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NRA\/status\/1529537165360779265?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1529537165360779265%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2022%2F05%2F26%2Fdon-mclean-nra-uvalde-texas-shooting-2%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expressed<\/a> its \u201cdeepest sympathies\u201d to the families of the 21 victims killed in the shooting in a Wednesday statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur deepest sympathies are with the families and victims involved in this horrific and evil crime. On behalf of our members, we salute the courage of school officials, first responders and others who offered their support and services,\u201d the statement said. \u201cAlthough an investigation is underway and facts are still emerging, we recognize this was the act of a lone, deranged criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we gather in Houston, we will reflect on these events, pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump, Republican Texas Sen.
