Jim Jordan told of the drawn-out battle with the committee over compelled cooperation after J6 panel members subpoenaed the pair plus three Republican colleagues earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Americans are struggling to put gas in the tank and food on the table, Democrats are busy weaponizing government to attack Republicans,\u201d McCarthy and Jordan wrote. \u201cWith no effective check on its power, the Select Committee is trampling on fundamental Constitutional rights. It is investigating the political speech of private citizens and demanding access to their personal records and private communications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pair railed against the committee for being illegitimate after Speaker Nancy Pelosi barred Republican appointments. Her deputies have continued to operate in secrecy, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/04\/pelosi-is-blocking-access-to-house-january-6-records-what-is-she-hiding\/\">refusing<\/a> to share documents with colleagues across the aisle. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than operating openly, the Select Committee is working behind closed doors and selectively leaking cherry-picked information,\u201d they wrote. In recent weeks, the committee has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/30\/the-attacks-on-clarence-and-ginni-thomas-are-merely-latest-in-a-decades-long-smear-campaign\/\">leaked<\/a> personal exchanges between private citizens to smear political dissidents. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it has presented some evidence in public, the committee\u2019s been caught deliberately altering documents\u2014including a text message pertaining to one of us\u2014to malign conservatives,\u201d they added, referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/15\/breaking-january-6-committee-admits-it-doctored-text-message-between-meadows-and-jordan\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=breaking-january-6-committee-admits-it-doctored-text-message-between-meadows-and-jordan\">Federalist reporting<\/a> when the probe was caught manipulating texts between Jordan and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. \u201cOne would expect this sort of inquiry from a banana republic, not from the U.S. House of Representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The joint op-ed previews a refusal from Republican lawmakers to offer sworn testimony to the committee after denying voluntary participation, which was requested earlier this year. Conflicts of interest were <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/13\/house-counsel-who-subpoenaed-mccarthy-for-jan-6-under-fire-for-conflicts-of-interest\/\">raised<\/a> when the members received subpoenas two weeks ago, as the House counsel responsible for representing lawmakers simultaneously signed off on their authorization. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis attempt to coerce information from members of Congress about their official duties is a dangerous abuse of power, serves no legitimate legislative purpose, and eviscerates constitutional norms,\u201d McCarthy and Jordan wrote. \u201cEven if the Jan. 6 Select Committee was acting in good faith, we have no relevant information that would assist in advancing its legislative purpose. Democrats know this because we told them in January.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The five Republicans in the lower chamber are among the hundreds of others who have been subpoenaed even though they have no connection to the Capitol riot; they\u2019re simply political dissidents Democrats seek to punish. One subpoena even targeted a political operative working to unseat Committee Vice-Chair Liz Cheney in Wyoming and was not involved in any capital events on Jan. 6 whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>The committee is now in the process of moving to the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/what-the-jan-6-committee-has-done-and-whats-next\/2022\/05\/18\/3048056e-d6e5-11ec-be17-286164974c54_story.html\">public phase<\/a>\u201d ahead of the November midterms, an election cycle that is traditionally hostile to the party in the White House. Democrats on the probe conceded to The Washington Post that the committee\u2019s work was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/19\/democrats-admit-jan-6-committee-is-all-about-midterms\/\">all about the midterms<\/a>, as they hope to revive interest in the 17-month-old riot with televised hearings.
