Next, Biden waited <em>more than a year<\/em> to finally replace the officials, and he started by choosing a very\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1172\/vote_117_2_00055.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unpopular FDA commissioner<\/a>,\u00a0an uninspiring non-reformer and Obama-era re-tread,\u00a0Dr. Robert Califf.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The same Joe Biden that campaigned on his \u201cplan\u201d to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/spencerbrown\/2021\/12\/28\/12-times-biden-promised-he-had-a-plan-to-shut-down-the-virus-n2601143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end the pandemic<\/a>, later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/22\/biden-says-nothing-can-change-the-trajectory-of-covid-pandemic-over-the-next-several-months.html\">admitting<\/a>\u00a0he actually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/biden-never-really-had-a-plan-for-the-coronavirus-and-its-showing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">never<\/a>\u00a0had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2021\/12\/28\/covid-biden-no-federal-solution-states-control-pandemic\/9034179002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">any \u201cplan<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0now wants to let Americans know that he has a different \u201cplan\u201d for the baby formula shortage \u2014 which was caused by Califf\u2019s FDA incorrectly blaming Abbott for infant deaths and shutting down its facility in the first place, without consideration of the ramifications. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>About 75 percent of U.S. parents and caregivers rely on baby formula to meet the nutritional needs of infants up to 6 months of age. The shortage has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2022\/05\/18\/baby-formula-shortage-impact\/\">disproportionately impacted low-income families and babies<\/a> that require specialty formulas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When news of the shortage broke, the Biden administration\u2019s first recommendation was to tell American parents to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/welovetrump.com\/2022\/05\/13\/call-a-doctor-psakis-answer-to-parents-if-they-cant-find-baby-formula\/\">call a doctor<\/a>\u201d to ask them where to buy formula. As a former professor of pharmacology to medical students at Yale and Georgetown universities, I must have missed the lesson plan memo that instructed future physicians on where to shop for baby formula. On a side note, I can tell you that my physician colleagues are already overwhelmed with non-clinical duties, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brucelee\/2016\/09\/07\/doctors-wasting-over-two-thirds-of-their-time-doing-paperwork\/\">spending two-thirds of their time on paperwork for medical insurance carriers<\/a>, and are becoming increasingly burdened with direct patient care responsibilities due to hospital <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/02\/10\/how-vaccine-mandates-caused-dangerous-hospital-care-shortages-in-wisconsin\/\">understaffing<\/a> caused by Covid-19 vaccine mandates. Asking Americans to call their \u201cdoctors\u201d as a cover for Biden\u2019s FDA error is thoughtless and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration then deflected to physicians <em>again<\/em>, saying that panicked mothers should call their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/alaska-mom-formula-shortage-panic-parents\">pediatricians to ask for free samples<\/a> and to prescribe alternative formulas. The fact that mothers need to make appointments for their infants and physicians now must break away from their daily patient load and administrative duties due to an FDA-caused mess is the core issue at hand.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the Department of Health and Human Services created a webpage telling Americans to call a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/formula\/index.html\">community organizer<\/a>\u201d via their local \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/communityactionpartnership.com\/find-a-cap\/\">Community Action Agency <\/a>\u201d so mothers can beg for formula from their local food bank. But that\u2019s hardly a solution; it just shifts the problem from one mother to a different mother!<\/p>\n<p>Strangely, the webpage makes no mention of calling the government\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/12\/border-detention-center-has-baby-formula-amid-shortage-photos\/\">border detention centers<\/a> to obtain the stockpiles of formula reserved for those illegally crossing the southern border.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a far cry from the Biden we saw running for office who eloquently promised to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joebiden\/status\/1295133234637025284?lang=en\">take responsibility and not shift the blame to others<\/a>. What a difference an election and two years make!<\/p>\n<p>The vacuum of leadership and multitude of poor advice has led to massive confusion, and people panicking and disgracing themselves by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/formulashortage\">taking advantage<\/a> of the matter. <a href=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/v15dwzh-bidens-america-mothers-hoarding-all-of-the-baby-formula-in-store.html\">Some online videos of what appear to be English as a second language \u201cfirst-generation Americans<\/a>\u201d unfamiliar with the traditional American way of life and our philosophy of \u201call being in this together\u201d have <a href=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/v14v2ue-tucker-they-are-hoarding-baby-formula.html\">taken to hoarding product<\/a> as \u201csport,\u201d putatively for online selling at a substantial markup. This behavior is predatory, selfish, and quite un-American.<\/p>\n<h2>The Real Responsibility Lies With Biden\u2019s FDA and Commissioner Califf<\/h2>\n<p>So what happened? Long story short: no Abbott products were found to be contaminated. That\u2019s not just my opinion \u2014 that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbbottNews\/status\/1525191090311254017\">the conclusion of the FDA and CDC following a thorough, months-long determination<\/a>.\u00a0Abbott had definite violations in its inspection, but none of them warranted an extended FDA shutdown leading to shortages for American infants.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Even after knowing that, the FDA is seemingly taking forever to allow the plant to re-open. As of this writing, it is <em>still<\/em> shut down.\u00a0When pressed for answers at the House Committee hearing on May 19, Califf couldn\u2019t project a date when store shelves would be restocked, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/05\/25\/baby-formula-shortage-fda-hearing-robert-califf\/9926753002\/\">admitting it could be months<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Will the commissioner or anyone else from the FDA be held accountable for the crisis of desperate mothers and their hungry babies over the last few months? Here is your answer: On May 19, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rightjournalism.com\/heres-the-real-reason-why-192-rs-voted-against-dems-baby-formula-package\/\"><em>House passed a bill to give FDA employees an additional $28,000,000.00 taxpayer-funded pay raise<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>Although the bill states that funding is also to address the baby formula shortage, the FDA already has<em> <\/em>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/congressional-testimony\/presidents-fy2022-budget-request-fda-06102021\">$6.5 billion dollar budget for 2022, $3.6 billion of which was \u201cdiscretionary spending.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is unlikely that the $28 million was ever needed for anything other than fatter FDA salaries, and especially since the exact breakdown of baby formula vigilance versus pay raises isn\u2019t specified, it is safe to assume that majority of it will go to salaries.\u00a0In other words, congressional Democrats alone have decided to reward the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtvm.com\/2022\/05\/25\/fda-chief-detail-delays-inspecting-baby-formula-plant\/\">lackadaisical<\/a> and incompetent FDA that inappropriately shut down the Abbott facility, which led to the baby formula shortage in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden has had to invoke the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BcKp_bpbX1I&#038;ab_channel=LiveNOWfromFOX\">Defense Production Act<\/a> to cover up the failures of his administration and in particular those of FDA Commissioner Califf in addressing this situation in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/05\/25\/baby-formula-shortage-fda-hearing-robert-califf\/9926753002\/\">timely manner<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the shortage in formula has necessitated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=baby+formula+shortage+hospital+admissions&#038;ei=wNGPYpWHA5bBuvQPmrKi8A8&#038;start=10&#038;sa=N&#038;ved=2ahUKEwiV56KS8P33AhWWoI4IHRqZCP4Q8tMDegQIARA4&#038;biw=1089&#038;bih=559&#038;dpr=2\">hospital admissions for infants all over the U.S.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/tatler\/2013\/04\/03\/diana-degette-d-co-idiot-politician-of-the-day-n177580\">Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo.<\/a>, chairwoman of the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, who had previously <a href=\"https:\/\/degette.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/degette-statement-on-inauguration-of-joe-biden\">gushed at the Biden-Harris inauguration<\/a>, really said it all when she referred to the baby formula shortage as \u201cunacceptable, and worse, totally preventable,\u201d further going on to tell the FDA commissioner that because of it \u201cbabies and children are suffering.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>If You Were Abbott, Wouldn\u2019t <em>You<\/em>\u00a0Move Overseas Too?<\/h2>\n<p>Now formula will be imported from other countries, but as a drug safety expert, I should warn Americans: Unlike Abbott, we don\u2019t know if the FDA has ever inspected those overseas facilities recently \u2014 or ever \u2014 or if the FDA has any plans for conducting comprehensive \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.almacgroup.com\/analytical-solid-state\/pharmaceutical-drug-product-release-testing\/\">release testing<\/a>\u201d at any point before the formula is sent off to American infants. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response to its series of failures, the White House made an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gCQxAKXeuCs&#038;ab_channel=TheWhiteHouse\">obviously staged video of Biden<\/a> calling companies like Gerber and Reckitt on speakerphone to beg them to ramp up production by overworking their employees to make more formula to cover up for the FDA\u2019s mistakes. Biden appeared to heavily rely on reading notecards. On a side note, all of Biden\u2019s staff wore masks while Biden did not.<\/p>\n<p>The natural business and economic consequences of the ineptitude of the Biden\u2019s FDA is that baby formula manufacturers will be motivated to move their manufacturing facilities from the U.S. to foreign countries, where the FDA won\u2019t be breathing down their necks and able to shut them down based on a whim. If Abbott and companies like it move manufacturing out of country it will result in yet another vacant American manufacturing plant plus lost property, corporate, and salary taxes, while unemployment will need to be paid to those losing their jobs. It\u2019s not just desperate mothers and hungry babies who will lose in this crisis, but all Americans.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear Biden has no intention of taking any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspresidentialelectionnews.com\/2022\/01\/axios-heres-a-list-of-bidens-epic-failures-from-year-one\/\">responsibility<\/a> for this (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/washington-secrets\/list-100-biden-failures-in-100-days-america-first-to-america-last\">other failures<\/a>), and it\u2019s not very \u201cadult-like.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/topics\/author\/david-gortler\">Dr. David Gortler<\/a> is a pharmacologist, pharmacist, and an FDA and health policy fellow at the <a href=\"https:\/\/eppc.org\/author\/david_gortler\/\">Ethics and Public Policy Center<\/a>.
