Gavin Newsom (D-CA), the leader of America\u2019s largest blue state,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gavin-newsoms-6-worst-policies-as-california-governor\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a> <span>that they had successfully gathered the 1.5 million signatures necessary to invoke a new gubernatorial election. This week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY), the chief executive of America\u2019s second-largest blue state, is facing an FBI investigation and related efforts from the state legislature to strip away his emergency powers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gov. Cu<\/span><span>omo \u2014 who h<\/span><span>as served as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Attorney General of New York, and Chair of the National Governors Association<\/span> <span>\u2014<\/span> <span>heads a gubernatorial administration notorious for immersing itself in scandals and executing aggressive far-left policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are five of his worst moves as leader of New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sending COVID-Positive Seniors Into Nursing Homes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Gov. Cuomo joined four other Democratic governors in forcing senior citizens infected with COVID-19 into their nursing homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Between the release of Cuomo\u2019s directive on March 25 and its<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/5ebc0ad45b73a899efa81f098330204c\"><span>reversal<\/span><\/a> <span>on May 10, at least 4,500 recovering COVID-19 patients were readmitted to their nursing homes. With 5,700 deaths, New York subsequently led the nation in nursing home deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In early 2021, allegations of a cover-up effort from the governor\u2019s office became public. Cuomo staffer Melissa DeRosa<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cuomo-aides-say-ny-nursing-homes-getting-away-with-a-lot-amid-accusations-of-cover-up\"><span>told<\/span><\/a> <span>lawmakers that the administration had undercounted COVID-19 deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd basically, we froze,\u201d DeRosa said during a meeting. \u201cBecause then we were in a position where we weren\u2019t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren\u2019t sure if there was going to be an investigation\u201d by then-President Trump\u2019s Department of Justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>State lawmakers then moved to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-york-democrat-state-senators-issue-statement-calling-for-cuomos-emergency-powers-to-be-stripped\"><span>revoke<\/span><\/a> <span>Cuomo\u2019s emergency powers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWithout exception, the New York State Constitution calls for the Legislature to govern as a co-equal branch of government,\u201d read a letter endorsed by over a dozen Democratic state senators. \u201cWhile COVID-19 has tested the limits of our people and state \u2014 and, early during the pandemic, required the government to restructure decision making to render rapid, necessary public health judgments \u2014 it is clear that the expanded emergency powers granted to the Governor are no longer appropriate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhile the executive\u2019s authority to issue directives is due to expire on April 30, we urge the Senate to advance and adopt a repeal as expeditiously as possible,\u201d they said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Days later, New York Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-NY) told CNN that Cuomo<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrat-lawmaker-claims-governor-cuomo-threatened-to-destroy-him-over-nursing-home-criticisms\"><span>threatened<\/span><\/a> <span>retribution if he did not assist in suppressing reports of undercounted nursing home deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe tried to pressure me to issue a statement, and it was a very traumatizing experience,\u201d explained Kim, who added that Cuomo allegedly communicated that \u201cwe\u2019re in this business together and we don\u2019t cross certain lines and he said I hadn\u2019t seen his wrath and that he can destroy me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The FBI and the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York are in the early stages of an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-fbi-u-s-attorney-investigating-cuomo-administration-over-nursing-home-deaths\"><span>investigation<\/span><\/a> <span>into Cuomo\u2019s nursing home policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Banning Religious Services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Cuomo has been particularly zealous in his enforcement of limits upon religious activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIndividuals should not gather in houses of worship, homes, or other locations for religious services until the end of this public health emergency,\u201d read his April<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.health.ny.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2020\/04\/doh_religiousgatheringsguidance_040520.pdf\"><span>executive order<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cIf possible, religious leaders should consider alternative forms of worship, replacing in-person gatherings with virtual services, such as phone or conference calls, videoconference calls, or online streaming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, an Orthodox Jewish organization, and two synagogues challenged the policy. In November, the Supreme Court issued a 5-4<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/supreme-court-backs-religious-challenge-to-cuomos-covid-restrictions-barrett-delivers-decisive-vote\"><span>ruling<\/span><\/a> <span>in favor of the religious groups, with Justice Amy Coney Barrett casting the deciding vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMembers of this Court are not public health experts, and we should respect the judgment of those with special expertise and responsibility in this area,\u201d said the majority opinion. \u201cBut even in a pandemic, the Constitution cannot be put away and forgotten. The restrictions at issue here, by effectively barring many from attending religious services, strike at the very heart of the First Amendment\u2019s guarantee of religious liberty. Before allowing this to occur, we have a duty to conduct a serious examination of the need for such a drastic measure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGovernment is not free to disregard the First Amendment in times of crisis,\u201d added Justice Neil Gorsuch in a concurring opinion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As of February 2, the New York state government<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/sites\/governor.ny.gov\/files\/atoms\/files\/ReligiousandFuneralServicesSummaryGuidance.pdf\"><span>mandates<\/span><\/a> <span>all religious and funeral services to stay within 50% of maximum capacity. The state also maintains a ban on all singing unless twelve feet of separation can be established between congregants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Codifying Roe v. Wade<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Gov. Cuomo signed a bill that removed most restrictions on abortion in the Empire State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>New York\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.nysenate.gov\/pdf\/bills\/2017\/S2796\"><span>Reproductive Health Act<\/span><\/a> <span>scrapped language in the penal code that extended legal protections to unborn babies more than twenty-four weeks old. In celebration, Cuomo lit One World Trade Center\u2019s spire pink at the beginning of 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Reproductive Health Act is a historic victory for New Yorkers and for our progressive values,\u201d<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-cuomo-directs-one-world-trade-center-and-other-landmarks-be-lit-pink-celebrate-signing\"><span>said<\/span><\/a> <span>the governor. \u201cIn the face of a federal government intent on rolling back Roe v. Wade and women\u2019s reproductive rights, I promised that we would enact this critical legislation within the first 30 days of the new session \u2014 and we got it done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fifteen months later, the top of the Empire State Building was lit in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/empire-state-building-lights-coronavirus-nyc-news-updates\/6065185\/\"><span>red<\/span><\/a> <span>to honor first responders addressing New York City\u2019s COVID-19 outbreak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Passing Aggressive Gun Control Measures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, Gov. Cuomo rushed to enact sweeping<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/safeact.ny.gov\/\"><span>restrictions<\/span><\/a> <span>on gun o<\/span><span>wnership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Upon passage of the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/2013\/statement-ag-schneiderman-regarding-passage-ny-safe-act\"><span>explained<\/span><\/a> <span>that the legislation marked \u201cdecisive action to protect New Yorkers from gun violence.\u201d The law expands the state\u2019s assault weapons ban, limits magazine capacity, and imposes new background checks on New Yorkers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Schneiderman said that the legislature and Gov. Cuomo \u201cdeserve credit\u201d for passing the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Striking down many of the SAFE Act\u2019s provisions, U.S. District Judge William Skretny took issue with the law\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2014\/01\/02\/safe-act-decision-highlights-embarrassin\/\"><span>vague<\/span><\/a> <span>language that seemingly arose from its hasty passage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For instance, Skretny annulled the legislation\u2019s ban on pistols defined as \u201csemiautomatic version[s] of an automatic rifle, shotgun or firearm.\u201d He explained that \u201can ordinary person cannot know whether any single semiautomatic pistol is a \u2018version\u2019 of an automatic one.\u201d Accordingly, \u201cthe statute provides no criteria to inform this determination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Breaking Campaign Finance Rules<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>In violation of his own executive order, Gov. Cuomo solicited donations from his political appointees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Eliot Spitzer \u2014 Cuomo\u2019s predecessor \u2014 enacted an executive order to stop appointees from donating to governors\u2019 campaigns. On his first day in office, Cuomo renewed the order. However, a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/24\/nyregion\/cuomo-fund-raising-ethics-appointees.html\"><span>New York Times<\/span><\/a> <span>investigation revealed that Cuomo had \u201creinterpreted\u201d the directive and solicited campaign funds in exchange for slots in his administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For instance, Steven Weiss gave the governor $53,000 after his nomination to the New York State Housing Finance Agency in 2011. Five years later, he earned an appointment to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute\u2019s state board. Kenneth Manning, who Cuomo tapped for a judicial screening committee in 2011, was appointed to the same cancer research board in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, the investigation showed that Cuomo raised over $890,000 from two dozen appointees.
