They now head to the Assembly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">SB <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB1327\">1327<\/a> allows for private citizens to sue those who make or sell specific illegal weapons, including ones that are not traceable, specific gun parts, and defined assault weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The bill is modeled after a Texas pro-life law that bans abortions after fetal cardiac activity can be detected, which is typically around six weeks of pregnancy. The Texas law allows for the private enforcement by citizens through lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the same way, SB 1327 notes, \u201c[a]ny person, other than an officer or employee of a state or local governmental entity in this state, may bring a civil action against any person\u201d who knowingly breaks the law, \u201cengages in conduct that aids or abets\u201d a violation of the law, or \u201c[k]nowingly commits an act with the intent to engage in the conduct described\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last year, Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom alluded to his desire to get such legislation passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Newsom released a statement about his \u201coutrage\u201d over the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to permit a ban on most abortion services in the state of Texas, as The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/newsom-promises-to-use-texas-abortion-law-precedent-to-restrict-guns\">reported<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI am outraged by yesterday\u2019s U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing Texas\u2019s ban on most abortion services to remain in place, and largely endorsing Texas\u2019s scheme to insulate its law from the fundamental protections of\u00a0Roe v. Wade,\u201d Newsom said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2021\/12\/11\/governor-newsom-statement-on-supreme-court-decision\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBut if states can now shield their laws from review by the federal courts that compare assault weapons to Swiss Army knives, then California will use that authority to protect people\u2019s lives, where Texas used it to put women in harm\u2019s way,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Tuesday, an 18-year-old man carried out a mass shooting inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing at least 19 students and 2 adults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After the tragedy, Newsom went after Republicans, re-tweeting a post from the National Rifle Association promoting President Donald Trump\u2019s upcoming speech. The governor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1529206631669460992\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cMeanwhile\u2026\u201d on his re-tweet.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Meanwhile\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vaqLFHzk0q\">https:\/\/t.co\/vaqLFHzk0q<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1529218969453768704?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 24, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He also specifically mentioned the Republican Party in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1529206631669460992\">tweet<\/a>, writing, \u201c14 children and a teacher dead.
