Meta announced the end of Thiel\u2019s 17-year tenure on the board in February \u2014 and reports indicated that the billionaire is leaving to prioritize supporting Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has served on our board for almost two decades, and we\u2019ve always known that at some point he would devote his time to other interests,\u201d Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.fb.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2022\/Peter-Thiel-to-Retire-from-Meta-Board-of-Directors-at-2022-Annual-Shareholder-Meeting\/default.aspx\">said<\/a> earlier this year. \u201cI\u2019m grateful he\u2019s served on our board for as long as he has, and I wish him the best in his journey ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/07\/technology\/peter-thiel-facebook.html\">The New York Times<\/a> reported that a person familiar with Thiel\u2019s thinking attributes his exit to a desire to influence the midterms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThiel, 54, wants to focus on influencing November\u2019s midterm elections, said a person with knowledge of Mr. Thiel\u2019s thinking who declined to be identified,\u201d the outlet reported. \u201cThiel sees the midterms as crucial to changing the direction of the country, this person said, and he is backing candidates who support the agenda of former President Donald J. Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Thiel has invested in Senate candidates Blake Masters of Arizona and J.D. Vance of Ohio. Earlier this week, Thiel contributed $3.5 million to a super PAC supporting Masters, his former employee \u2014 bringing his total contribution to $13.5 million, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/05\/24\/peter-thiel-blake-masters-arizona-senate\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thiel also backed a super PAC in support of Vance, another employee, with $10 million. He added $3.5 million more after Vance earned the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, as well as $1.5 million in the final days of Ohio\u2019s primary \u2014 from which Vance emerged victorious.<\/p>\n<p>In total, Thiel is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/silicon-valley-mega-investor-leaving-metas-board-for-gop-politics-report\">backing<\/a> four Senate candidates and 12 House candidates ahead of the fall elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a privilege to work with one of the great entrepreneurs of our time,\u201d Thiel said of his departure from Meta. \u201cMark Zuckerberg\u2019s intelligence, energy, and conscientiousness are tremendous. His talents will serve Meta well as he leads the company into a new era.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turnout data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/republicans-have-a-massive-turnout-advantage-in-2022-primaries-so-far-report\">indicate<\/a> that Republicans may be well-positioned for victories in November. In the primary elections in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, and Oregon, Republicans made up 54.9% of the total votes cast. When factoring in the other five states that have already held primaries \u2014 Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, and West Virginia \u2014 Republicans account for fully 60% of votes cast in the primaries so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn every state where I\u2019ve been measuring turnout changes relative to previous midterms, I\u2019m seeing a clear advantage on the Republican side,\u201d JMC Analytics founder John Couvillon told the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/18\/gop-primary-turnout-suggests-red-wave-in-november-midterms\/\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Republican candidates, Thiel has backed several conservative-leaning initiatives over the past year. Narya Capital \u2014 a venture fund co-founded by Thiel and Vance \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/j-d-vance-peter-thiel-invest-in-free-speech-youtube-alternative-called-rumble\">invested<\/a> in video platform Rumble, which markets itself as an alternative to video websites created by Big Tech.<\/p>\n<p>Thiel also joined with other prominent investors in backing entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy\u2019s Strive \u2014 an asset management company that will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/entrepreneur-who-launched-anti-woke-asset-management-fund-reports-flood-of-job-applicants\">compete<\/a> with BlackRock, Vanguard, and other firms that push \u201cstakeholder capitalism\u201d and other progressive viewpoints onto firms in their portfolios.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conservative businessman Peter Thiel officially stepped down from Facebook parent company Meta\u2019s board of directors on Wednesday.
