She faces up to 10 years in prison under Russia\u2019s strict anti-drug laws.\u00a0On Wednesday, her wife, Cherelle Griner, appeared on ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America,\u201d and beseeched Biden to intervene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one person that can go get her, and that\u2019s our president,\u201d Griner told ESPN\u2019s Angela Rye in an interview that aired Wednesday on ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d \u201cHe has that power. You know, I\u2019m just like, \u2018Why are we not using it? Like, urgently, use it.\u2019 We\u2019re expecting him to use his power to get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I don\u2019t know why we\u2019re not always talking about this. Brittney Griner should be our biggest sports story. But with relations between the two countries deteriorating amid Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, it is not clear what diplomatic chips the Biden administration has to play.<\/p>\n<p>Cherelle Griner, who earlier this month graduated from the North Carolina Central University School of Law, said she last spoke with her 31-year-old, two-time Olympian wife on February 17. Since then, she has depended on updates from attorneys representing the basketball star.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in a position of complete vulnerability right now,\u201d she told the ABC morning show. \u201cI have to trust people that I didn\u2019t even know until Feb. 17,\u201d Cherelle Griner said. \u201cSo I\u2019m trusting her lawyers. \u2026 \u2018How does she look? How is her spirit? How is her energy?\u2019 I\u2019m just asking all those questions, trying to just get some type of indication or vibe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome days they say, \u2018She\u2019s really strong. \u2026 She seemed in good spirits when we talked.\u2019 And sometimes they\u2019ll say, \u2018Her energy was really low,&#8217;\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Brittney Griner had flown to Russia to finish her season for UMMC Ekaterinburg when she was arrested. The team competes in the Russian Premier League and FIBA Europe\u2019s EuroLeague. WNBA players can make far bigger salaries playing in Europe and Asia during the league\u2019s off-season than they can earn in the United States, where interest in women\u2019s basketball is limited.
