Another approved fact-checker used the exact term \u201cenergy independence\u201d that AFP employed to nit-pick the MRC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AFP censored 27 MRC posts combined on Facebook and Instagram between Feb. 28 and March 26. Those posts quoted high-profile figures, including former President Donald Trump, Tesla CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/elon-musk\">Elon Musk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackburn.senate.gov\/about-marsha\">Sen. Marsha Blackburn <\/a>(R-TN) and MRC President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrc.org\/staff\/l-brent-bozell-iii\">Brent Bozell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the posts promoted MRC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/videos\/killing-keystone-how-biden-left-destroyed-american-energy-independence\">mini-documentary<\/a> \u201cKilling Keystone.\u201d Most of the posts had a caption pointing to Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2021\/12\/17\/bidens-many-anti-energy-policies-are-hurting-producers-consumers-alike\/\">culpability<\/a> in America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/energy-economics\/commentary\/biden-energy-crisis-begging-others-save-him-himself\">losing its<\/a> energy independence to become more reliant on foreign oil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cnsnewscom\/photos\/10158449270385927\">Facebook <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CbntENDtTHk\/?utm_medium=copy_link\">Instagram<\/a> slapped a \u201cMissing Context\u201d label on the MRC posts. Facebook in particular claimed, \u201cIndependent fact-checkers say this information is missing context and could mislead people.\u201d Facebook and Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.324Q7V7?fbclid=IwAR3WWB43IFcicP4zbT3RK2wRQPJ8yuexUJutKqQ9-4NtBgVHmwzVvWPDv98\">linked<\/a> out to two <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.326T98W?fbclid=IwAR3BtCrP0YnvG4uejI_dkiz3R0peAvMTIPIyxxSbvO3RtpL_v546BIBCUjA\">articles<\/a> by the French-government-funded fact-checker AFP which twisted facts to protect Biden.<\/p>\n<p>One fact-check in particular lambasted posts that criticized Biden for undermining U.S. energy independence. That fact-check claimed that American imports of foreign oil under Trump invalidated statements supporting the notion that the U.S. was energy-independent under Trump\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n<p>But fellow Facebook fact-checker Lead Stories contradicted AFP, <a href=\"https:\/\/leadstories.com\/hoax-alert\/2021\/05\/fact-check-us-was-not-energy-independent-four-months-ago.html\">writing<\/a> in a May 2021 fact-check: \u201cIn 2019, when Donald Trump was president, <strong>the U.S. did achieve energy independence<\/strong>, something that had not happened since 1957.\u201d Apparently these aligned fact-checkers didn\u2019t have their story straight. [Emphasis added.]\n<p><em>HIGHLIGHTS:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>27 MRC Posts Censored: <\/strong>Meta slapped \u201cMissing Context\u201d labels on 27 MRC posts on Facebook and Instagram for criticizing Biden\u2019s anti-American energy policies, and linked out to two AFP fact-checks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Facebook Fact-Checker AFP Tried to Eliminate \u201cEnergy Independence\u201d Nuance: <\/strong>Fact-checker Agence France-Press claimed accusations against Biden undermining U.S. \u201cenergy independence\u201d were misleading because the U.S. still imports foreign oil.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AFP Shielded Biden from Responsibility for Rising Gas Prices: <\/strong>Another AFP fact-check defending Biden from responsibility for spiking gas prices was wielded against one MRC Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/newsbusters\/photos\/10160439246891178\">post<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Facebook Fact-Checkers Can\u2019t Agree on What \u201cEnergy Independence\u201d Means: <\/strong>AFP\u2019s \u201cenergy independence\u201d fact-check completely contradicted fellow fact-checker Lead Stories\u2019 2021 usage of the term: \u201cIn 2019, when Donald Trump was president, the U.S. did achieve energy independence, something that had not happened since 1957.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>MRC Is Not the Only Group Censored for Criticizing Biden on Energy:<\/strong> The MRC wasn\u2019t the only target. The two AFP fact-checks also targeted a litany of other social media pages. Pages tagged with a \u201cMissing Context\u201d label for either alluding to American energy independence or blaming Biden for spiking gas prices included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/theijr\/posts\/10160359685007971\">Independent Journal Review<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/heritageforamerica\/posts\/1426511581101335\/\">Heritage Action<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=678628586786421\">Texas Public Policy Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/yaliberty\/posts\/357551056411111\">Young Americans for Liberty<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/secureamericanow\/posts\/315208967376400\">Secure America Now<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AFP Slaps Comment Section with Fact-Check: <\/strong>AFP went out of its way to target the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/teapartypatriots\/posts\/323366319829196\">Tea Party Patriots<\/a> account for blaming Biden for high gas prices. And while Facebook did not give the Tea Party Patriots post a \u201cMissing Context\u201d label, AFP posted in a comment its Biden-protecting fact-check on gas prices in an attempt to undercut a narrative it disagreed with. AFP also linked out to another article by the liberal, publicly-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/11\/14\/1055068583\/gasoline-prices-gas-energy-inflation-biden?fbclid=IwAR0KdlpLmK9rguhzJeLtTMnfrJIyz-_uADKfyZY9doif93Eu6aO5KpNJNw8\">National Public Radio<\/a> attempting to defend Biden.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Groups Agree with the MRC\u2019s Usage of \u201cEnergy Independence\u201d: <\/strong>The MRC\u2019s usage of \u201cenergy independence\u201d was based on the U.S. exporting more energy than it imported under Trump\u2019s administration. Other groups agreed with that nuance. The pro-free market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/about\/?gclid=CjwKCAjwxZqSBhAHEiwASr9n9A2yTRMRb7sOek6TAOQ763pCSGL1p6WZ1w78tFfFmUeV5axVY2YMkhoCWgkQAvD_BwE\">Institute for Energy Research<\/a> released an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/fossil-fuels\/gas-and-oil\/the-united-states-was-energy-independent-in-2019-for-the-first-time-since-1957\/\">editorial<\/a> on May 11, 2020, headlined: \u201cThe United States Was Energy Independent in 2019 for the First Time Since 1957.\u201d The <em>Investor\u2019s Business Daily<\/em> editorial board wrote a piece in 2018 headlined: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investors.com\/politics\/editorials\/energy-independence-trump\/\">Trump Just Achieved What Every President Since Nixon Had Promised: Energy Independence<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AFP Digital Verification Editor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rleverafp\/with_replies\">Rob Lever wrote both <\/a>AFP fact-checks. He claimed that posts saying Biden undermined U.S. \u201cenergy independence\u201d were \u201cmisleading\u201d because the U.S. still \u201cimports millions of barrels per day, and global market conditions will affect the country no matter how much crude it produces domestically.\u201d One of Lever\u2019s AFP fact-checks cited Columbia University senior research scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/GT5N-V82V\">Antoine Halff<\/a> saying: \u201c\u2018You can be net positive or net neutral in terms of exports of energy but that doesn\u2019t mean being able to <strong>function efficiently in isolation.<\/strong>\u2019&#8221; [Emphasis added.]\n<p>But Lever targeted a straw man. None of the censored MRC posts indicated that the U.S. is 100 percent disconnected from foreign energy sources. In fact, the term \u201cenergy independence\u201d is nuanced, and even Lead Stories understood that.<\/p>\n<p>Lead Stories <a href=\"https:\/\/leadstories.com\/hoax-alert\/2021\/02\/fact-check-the-united-states-was-not-sent-back-fifty-year-in-terms-of-energy-independece-in-10-days.html\">addressed in a separate fact-check<\/a> of a Facebook post on Feb. 17, 2021, \u201cwhether it&#8217;s true that the United States was \u2018energy independent\u2019 in 2019 for the first time since 1957.\u201d Lead Stories found: \u201c<strong>On this question, the post is correct, although the definition and data have been argued.\u201d<\/strong> Another liberal Meta fact-checker, PolitiFact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/truth-o-meter\/promises\/trumpometer\/promise\/1359\/achieve-energy-independence\/\">conceded<\/a> in 2020 that \u201c[o]ne definition of energy independence says it occurs when domestic production outpaces domestic consumption.\u201d [Emphasis added.]\n<p>Other legacy outlets have used the nuanced definition of \u201cenergy independence\u201d as well. The most glaring example of this came from none other than <em>The Washington Post <\/em>editorial board in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/08\/15\/biden-can-have-cheap-gas-or-fight-climate-change-not-both\/\">2021<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Republicans attacked [National Security Advisor Jake] Sullivan\u2019s comments as evidence that Biden policies such as the curtailment of domestic oil and gas leases on federal land, and cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline, <strong>were undermining hard-won U.S. energy independence. They have a point: <\/strong>Crude oil is a fungible commodity. It seems strange indeed to encourage drilling in Saudi Arabia and Russia \u2014 they call the shots in OPEC+ \u2014 while discouraging it in North America,\u00a0[emphasis added].<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There was widespread agreement in the media on this point.<\/p>\n<p>ABC 4 News <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews4.com\/news\/nation-world\/fact-check-team-what-does-being-energy-independent-mean-gas-oil-russia-ukraine-crisis-money-war-fuel\">wrote<\/a> on March 7, 2022: \u201cLast year was neck and neck but technically the U.S. was energy independent since it exported more than it imported.\u201d Forbes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rrapier\/2022\/03\/08\/surprise-the-us-is-still-energy-independent\/?sh=7eb7c230b66c\">published a piece<\/a> March 8, 2022, headlined: \u201cSurprise! The U.S. Is Still Energy Independent.\u201d Axios published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/us-energy-independent-petroleum-2982ed18-9110-4c31-ad67-82abe643f661.html\">story<\/a> Feb. 19, 2022, headlined: \u201cThe U.S. is now energy independent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/nb\/tim-graham\/2022\/01\/18\/cnn-fact-checker-daniel-dale-obviously-soft-biden-no-check-six-weeks\">pro-Biden<\/a> CNN fact-checker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/profiles\/daniel-dale\">Daniel Dale<\/a>, in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/15\/politics\/energy-independence-fact-check\/index.html\">unironic<\/a> Trump fact-check, conceded that the term \u201cenergy independence\u201d has \u201c<strong>various non-literal definitions<\/strong>.<strong>\u201d <\/strong>Dale even admitted that Trump achieved some definitions of the term, but tried to spin the nuanced versions to benefit Biden: \u201c<strong>And the US did satisfy some of these definitions under Trump in 2020<\/strong> \u2014 as it did again in the 11 months of 2021, mostly under Biden, for which we have complete data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/about\/?gclid=CjwKCAjwxZqSBhAHEiwASr9n9A2yTRMRb7sOek6TAOQ763pCSGL1p6WZ1w78tFfFmUeV5axVY2YMkhoCWgkQAvD_BwE\">Institute for Energy Research<\/a> released an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/fossil-fuels\/gas-and-oil\/the-united-states-was-energy-independent-in-2019-for-the-first-time-since-1957\/\">editorial<\/a> on May 11, 2020, in which it stated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>U.S. energy production in 2019 was higher than U.S. energy consumption for the first time in 62 years. <strong>Thus, the U.S. attained the long-held goal of \u2018energy independence\u2019\u2014which is not to say that we did not import or export energy, but that we produced more energy than we used<\/strong>\u00a0[emphasis added].<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>Investor\u2019s Business Daily<\/em> editorial board wrote a piece in 2018 headlined: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investors.com\/politics\/editorials\/energy-independence-trump\/\">Trump Just Achieved What Every President Since Nixon Had Promised: Energy Independence<\/a>.\u201d IBD\u2019s understanding of what had transpired in the energy sector in 2018 was parallely to what the IER stipulated: \u201cLast week, the U.S. exported more oil than we imported, for the first time in 70-plus years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also, more than a year into Biden\u2019s presidency, the U.S. Energy Information Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=51338\">projected<\/a> in February that the U.S. would become \u201ca <strong>net importer<\/strong> of petroleum in 2022.\u201d Oilprice.com <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/The-US-Will-Be-A-Net-Oil-Importer-In-2022.html\">defines<\/a> a net petroleum importer as \u201ca country that imports more crude oil and refined products than the crude and products it exports.\u201d [Emphasis added.]\n<p>But this context didn\u2019t matter. Lever railed against \u201c[c]laims that Biden destroyed US energy independence.\u201d Lever reasserted that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/Nwsro\">one<\/a> of the MRC\u2019s posts and other assertions similar to the content of the post \u201cmisrepresent\u201d the nature of the oil market because the U.S. still imports foreign oil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US became a \u2018net annual petroleum exporter\u2019 in 2020, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/XH5P-YNHJ\">official government data<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/3X78-F8GS\">some commentators<\/a> touted as <strong>energy independence<\/strong>,\u201d he said. \u201cBut supply is not a one-sided metric; data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that <strong>American exports that year amounted to about 8.51 million barrels per day (bpd), while imports were still about 7.86 million bpd<\/strong>.\u201d [Emphasis added.]\n<p>What\u2019s worse is that Facebook misrepresented the impact of censorship. The platform sent notifications that it was limiting the reach of several MRC posts tagged with the \u201cmissing context\u201d label.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The notifications read as follows: \u201cThe post will be moved lower in Feed because it includes information that independent fact-checkers said was false.\u201d The action contradicts Facebook\u2019s own policies. Reduced distribution penalties apply to posts labeled \u201cFalse\u201d or \u201cAltered,\u201d not those tagged with \u201cMissing Context\u201d labels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Meta\u2019s fact-checking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/journalismproject\/programs\/third-party-fact-checking\/new-ratings\">policy<\/a>, posts tagged \u201cFalse\u201d or \u201cAltered\u201d \u201cresult in our most aggressive actions: we will dramatically reduce the distribution of these posts, and apply our strongest warning labels.\u201d However, \u201c<strong>For content that&#8217;s \u2018Missing Context,\u2019 we&#8217;ll focus on surfacing more information from our fact-checking partners \u2026 [and] we&#8217;ll be introducing a lighter-weight warning label to more precisely reflect fact-checkers&#8217; assessments.<\/strong>\u201d [Emphasis added.]\n<p>So, which is it \u2013 \u201cMissing context\u201d or \u201cFalse\u201d? A Facebook spokesperson told the MRC that the Facebook notifications accusing the posts of \u201cfalse\u201d information leading to active reduction in distribution were in \u201cerror.\u201d However, this concession is useless as both forms of censorship are geared towards reducing web traffic. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/348d772c8a5e305fb8006aae0a8cab84\"><strong>Facebook<\/strong><\/a> reported that similarly fact-checked posts see a large reduction in engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s standard for censorship is ridiculous and hypocritical. The verified Democratic Party account <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=522699139217034&#038;set=a.488627185957563\">posted<\/a> March 10: \u201cFact: The U.S. is more <strong>energy independent <\/strong>under President Joe Biden than it was under Trump.\u201d According to the AFP fact-check Facebook used to censor the MRC, <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/GT5N-V82V\">Halff<\/a> argued that \u201cthe notion of \u2018energy independence\u2019 has little meaning in a globally interconnected world. \u2018I can&#8217;t think of any country that\u2019s energy independent,\u2019 Halff said.\u201d It appears that Facebook allows statements that the U.S. is\u201cenergy independent\u201d only if they benefit the left. [Emphasis added.]\n<p>Facebook used Lever\u2019s other <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.324Q7V7?fbclid=IwAR3WWB43IFcicP4zbT3RK2wRQPJ8yuexUJutKqQ9-4NtBgVHmwzVvWPDv98\">fact-check<\/a> to target a <em>NewsBusters <\/em>post promoting the MRC\u2019s Keystone XL documentary. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/newsbusters\/photos\/10160439246891178\">post stated<\/a>: \u201cLearn more about how Joe Biden and the far-left destroyed America&#8217;s energy independence in our mini-doc Killing Keystone.\u201d Lever\u2019s March 10 fact-check headlined \u201cPosts mislead on factors behind US energy price spike\u201d tried to deflect blame for spiking gas prices away from Biden&#8217;s eco-activist \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/business\/joseph-vazquez\/2021\/08\/13\/watch-fox-business-host-charles-payne-shreds-biden-war-us\">war<\/a>\u201d on American energy and killing the Keystone XL pipeline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The same promotion was posted (and censored) on <em>NewsBusters\u2019<\/em>\u00a0Instagram account with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CbnI516tX1L\/?utm_medium=copy_link\">different caption<\/a> that read: \u201cEver wonder why gas prices are [rising]? Link in bio to watch our award-winning mini-doc!\u201d Lever claimed such arguments were \u201cmisleading\u201d because \u201csharp swings in energy prices in 2022 come from a variety of factors.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>American Enterprise Institute resident scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/profile\/benjamin-zycher\/\">Benjamin Zycher<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/03\/does-the-biden-administration-deserve-blame-for-high-gasoline-prices\/\">pointed out<\/a> that Biden&#8217;s war against fossil fuels <a href=\"https:\/\/newsbusters.org\/blogs\/business\/jeffrey-clark\/2022\/03\/17\/washpost-fact-checker-claims-little-evidence-biden-blame\">contributed to reduced output<\/a> because of expectations of constraints on future investment. This, in turn, ended up lifting prices. \u201cLook no further than the Biden administration\u2019s policies for the answer,\u201d Zycher said.
