Bush\u2019s \u201cAxis of Evil\u201d speech, the United States\u2019 role in this conflict is postured to increase versus decrease.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mitt Romney writes an op-ed suggesting what should be done in the event of some nuclear incident in Ukraine. One option: immediately confront China, &#8220;War on Terror&#8221; style, and tell them \u2014 &#8220;You are either with us, or you are with Russia.&#8221; And\u2026 what happens after that? Then: &#8216;Over time, and depending on how the conflict in the east unfolds, US officials envision a larger presence for the US.&#8217; From <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WSJ?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WSJ<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ljTP7YpENz\">https:\/\/t.co\/ljTP7YpENz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Byron York (@ByronYork) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByronYork\/status\/1528738238416003072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"subscribe\" class=\"email-signup inarticle\">\n<h4>Support Conservative Voices!<\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Sign up to receive the latest<\/strong> political news, insight, and commentary delivered directly to your inbox.<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although there is nothing typical about our engagement in Ukraine thus far, last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/23\/politics\/us-embassy-kyiv-special-operations-forces\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said:<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are having that conversation with the State Department about what their security requirements might look like\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When news outlets started reporting more on this possibility, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/3497566-pentagon-says-no-decisions-have-been-made-on-special-forces-at-kyiv-embassy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Pentagon was quick to release the following statement<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are in close touch with our colleagues at the State Department about potential security requirements now that they have resumed operations at the embassy in Kiev, but no decisions have been made \u2013 and no specific proposals have been debated \u2013 at senior levels of the Department about the return of U.S. military members to Ukraine for that or any other purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In other words, \u201cnothing to see here, folks; move along, nothing to see.\u201d The Pentagon really needs to invest in a good plumber because that building is leaking uncontrollably at this point.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tough Talk That Leads To What, Exactly?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Senator Mitt Romney penned an op-ed in the New York Times where he postulates what the United States should do if Russia decides to utilize nuclear weapons. (Why he is convinced that Russia will use nuclear weapons, nobody knows.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Channeling his inner John Wayne, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/21\/mitt-romney-calls-on-nato-to-prepare-for-russian-nukes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he stated that the U.S. should pose an ultimatum to the world<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cYou are either with us, or you are with Russia \u2013 you cannot be with both.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, he doesn\u2019t follow up with the next step, \u2018and then what?\u2019 I think he assumes that the world would be with us. However, I\u2019m not nearly as confident as Mitt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Senator\u2019s concerns aren\u2019t the first to be brought up, to be fair. For example, chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/putin-using-nuclear-weapons-possibility-us-must-consider-mullen-1708931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Menedez said earlier this month<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOne of my concerns is that ironically, the more success that the Ukrainians have, the greater the risk that Putin will do something because he\u2019s losing has to save face at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;One of my concerns is that ironically, the more success that the Ukrainians have, the greater the risk that Putin will do something because he&#8217;s losing and has to save face at home.&#8221; \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorMenendez?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenatorMenendez<\/a> on the risk of Putin using a nuclear weapon in Ukraine. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FoxNewsSunday?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FoxNewsSunday<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fox News Sunday (@FoxNewsSunday) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FoxNewsSunday\/status\/1520770412463931392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So would Russia use nuclear weapons, and in what capacity?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/nearly-70-of-republicans-want-biden-impeached-after-2022-midterm-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nearly 70% Of Republicans Want Biden Impeached After 2022 Midterm Elections<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two Nuclear Doctrines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/russia-says-they-will-use-nuclear-weapons-these-conditions-1705132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia\u2019s Nuclear Weapons Doctrine states<\/a> that the use of nuclear weapons is authorized when:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Russia is attacked by weapons of mass destruction<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the enemy attacks the country\u2019s critical government or military sites in a way that would threaten a nuclear response<\/span><\/li>\n<li>a first strike against Russia is detected<\/li>\n<li>Russia is faced with existential military defeat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That seems pretty clear to me. Not a lot of ambiguity. (That\u2019s not to say governments abide by their own rules, of course.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Put that into contrast with our Nuclear Doctrine, which is laid out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/policy\/2022\/03\/bidens-nuke-review-omits-no-first-use-kills-naval-cruise-missile\/363823\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nuclear Posture Review.<\/a> It says that we:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c\u2026would only consider the use of nuclear weapons in extreme circumstances to defend the vital interests of the United States or it\u2019s allies and partners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Clear as mud? \u201cVital interests\u201d leaves quite a bit open to interpretation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While campaigning, President Biden had said he fully supports the \u2018no first use\u2019 concept versus what has historically been an ambiguous policy aimed at \u2018flexible deterrence.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just as an aside, as for heated rhetoric, this person is a sitting United States Congressman:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Coincidently, I\u2019m celebrating the 27,000 dead Russian soldiers and a bakers dozen dead GENERALS! How embarrassing for you!!<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SlavaUkraine?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SlavaUkraine<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6n8F66y4ch\">https:\/\/t.co\/6n8F66y4ch<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Adam Kinzinger\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8\u270c\ufe0f (@AdamKinzinger) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdamKinzinger\/status\/1528189856832184324?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Crisis After Crisis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The latest $40 billion aid package to Ukraine passed with only 11 Republicans voting against it, which brings the total aid to about <em>$54 billion<\/em> in a matter of months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By comparison, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/262742\/countries-with-the-highest-military-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia\u2019s entire defense budget<\/a> in 2021 was $66 billion.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/ukraine-funding-bill-11-republican-171945916.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senator Josh Hawley explained his no vote<\/a> stating the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI just think this is an exercise in nation building. So I\u2019m a nationalist. I\u2019m not in favor of nation building. I think we ought to be prioritizing American strength.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/19\/senate-40-billion-ukraine-aid-bill-00033719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">While about 25%<\/a> of the recent aid package is going to the U.S. military to help bolster capabilities in Europe, he has a good point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To defend his argument, one can merely point to the rising gas prices, rising cost of groceries, record debt, and baby formula shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The worst part is that we haven\u2019t seen anything yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/zelenskyys-global-food-crisis-official\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cRussia has blocked almost all ports and all, so to speak, maritime opportunities to export food \u2013 our grain, barley, sunflower and more. There will be a crisis in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The crisis he\u2019s referring to is the food crisis.
