Chris Murphy (D-CT), who said that Republicans needed to find a way to work with Democrats to \u201cpass laws that make this less likely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murphy also suggested that mental illness was not the problem when it came to major shootings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpare me the bull**** about mental illness. We don\u2019t have any more mental illness than any other country in the world,\u201d Murphy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/spare-bullshit-sen-chris-murphy-rips-gop-colleagues-texas-shooting-rcna30405\">claimed<\/a>. \u201cYou cannot explain this through a prism of mental illness because we don\u2019t \u2014 we\u2019re not an outlier on mental illness. We\u2019re an outlier when it comes to access to firearms and the ability of criminals and very sick people to get their hands on firearms. That\u2019s what makes America different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other notable Democrats who seized on the tragedy to call for more gun control laws included Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe horrific rampage in TX once again makes clear that there are some very sick people in this country with guns in their hands who should not have them,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cCongress may not be able to end this problem, but we must at least pass commonsense gun reforms to finally protect the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed that \u201cthere is no such thing as being \u2018pro-life\u2019 while supporting laws that let children be shot in their schools, elders in grocery stores, worshippers in their houses of faith, survivors by abusers, or anyone in a crowded place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an idolatry of violence,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd it must end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There is no such thing as being \u201cpro-life\u201d while supporting laws that let children be shot in their schools, elders in grocery stores, worshippers in their houses of faith, survivors by abusers, or anyone in a crowded place.<\/p>\n<p>It is an idolatry of violence. Ed Markey (D-MA) wrote, \u201cAbolish the filibuster and pass gun safety legislation now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) also called for passing new gun control laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only adjectives left to describe yet another school shooting are \u2018sick\u2019 and \u2018tired\u2019 of conservative extremists blocking common-sense steps to reduce the risk of these atrocities ripping away the lives of children and leaving their families to grieve their devastating losses,\u201d Sen.
