It uncovered 68,000 invalid signatures on the petitions of 10 Republican campaigns, leaving five below the 15,000 required for the primary, which is scheduled for August.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the candidates that now fall short, James Craig, a former Detroit police chief, and Perry Johnson, a Bloomfield Hills businessman, were frontrunners in the race, The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/five-gop-candidates-in-michigan-governors-race-face-disqualification-11653409460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. The development threatens to scramble the primary as the GOP attempts to take down Democratic Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/07\/gretchen-whitmer-lawsuit-abortion-constitutional-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gretchen Whitmer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bureau\u2019s report said there was currently no indication any of the candidates or campaigns had knowledge of the fraudulent <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/08\/gavin-newsom-recall-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signatures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7436164\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7436164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Detroit Police Chief James Craig talks to reporters about a shooting outside of a barber shop where nine people were shot November 6, 2013 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Joshua Lott\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The report said the bureau had never witnessed a situation \u201cin which this many circulators submitted such a substantial volume of fraudulent petition sheets consisting of invalid signatures, nor an instance in which it affected as many candidate petitions as at present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichigan\u2019s petition process is fatally flawed because it easily allows criminals to victimize candidates for public office and their thousands of supporters who legitimately sign petitions,\u201d Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/qualitymichigan.com\/breaking-perry-johnson-announces-plan-to-bring-quality-reforms-to-petition-process-for-candidates-running-for-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in a statement Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Weiser, chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/04\/michigan-republican-gretchen-whitmer-call-secretary-state-investigate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michigan Republican Party<\/a>, accused Democrats of attempting to disqualify Republican candidates behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats claim to be champions of democracy but are actively angling behind the scenes to disqualify their opponents in an unprecedented way because they want to take away choice from Michigan voters after years of terrible policies,\u201d Weiser told the WSJ. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/08\/two-michigan-men-acquitted-plot-kidnap-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Two Michigan Men Acquitted In Plot To Kidnap The Governor)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Craig <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/michigan-bureau-of-elections-top-gop-gubernatorial-candidates-ineligible-ballot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> Fox News he \u201cis continuing to fight this and will take it to court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bureau said it will be up to Michigan\u2019s Board of State Canvassers to determine whether the candidates have enough signatures.
