There are about 1,400 deaths in the U.S. every year attributed to SIDS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/baby\/health\/sids\/how-common-is-sids-statistics-parents-should-know\/#:~:text=About%203%2C500%20babies%20in%20the,reported%20deaths%20due%20to%20SIDS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parents.com<\/a> reports. Now, a viral post shared on Facebook claims the cause of the syndrome has been discovered. \u201cThey found the cause of SIDS!\u201d reads the May 13 Facebook post.<\/p>\n<p>This claim is misleading and appears to misrepresent the findings of a recent study. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/04\/10\/fact-check-morel-mushrooms-not-source-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: No, Morel Mushrooms Are Not The Source Coronavirus)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study published in The Lancet May 6, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/ebiom\/article\/PIIS2352-3964(22)00222-5\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Butyrylcholinesterase is a potential biomarker for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome<\/a>,\u201d explains researchers discovered the enzyme Butyrylcholinesterase appeared at lower levels in infants that died from SIDS than in those that did not. Dr. Carmel Harrington, the lead researcher of the study, told <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220520120638\/https:\/\/www.schn.health.nsw.gov.au\/news\/articles\/2022\/05\/world-first-breakthrough-could-prevent-sids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Sydney Children\u2019s Hospital Network<\/a> this discovery could help make SIDS \u201ca thing of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the study does not claim to have found the \u201ccause\u201d of SIDS. Rather, it claims to have found a biomarker that may increase the likelihood of the syndrome.
