Gas is a whopping $5.87 on Martha\u2019s Vineyard and $5.68 on Nantucket,\u201d the paper added.<\/p>\n<p>AAA Northeast spokesperson Mary Maguire told the paper those prices could get higher. \u201cA lot of people filling up their tanks and visiting gas stations this week will put upward pressure on the market,\u201d Maguire said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t wait to fill up until you get to a busy stretch of highway like the Mass Pike, or when you make it to Cape Cod or the Berkshires where prices are traditionally higher,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2022\/05\/23\/bostons-average-gas-price-nears-5-a-gallon-ahead-of-busy-memorial-day-weekend-fill-up-early-in-the-week\/?utm_email=F524648D44850441B4C435B3C3&#038;g2i_eui=077RnyqEPAsSzFsaI7y8Ud%2BAdKw8OS1I&#038;g2i_source=newsletter&#038;lctg=F524648D44850441B4C435B3C3&#038;active=no&#038;utm_source=listrak&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_term=https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2022\/05\/23\/bostons-average-gas-price-nears-5-a-gallon-ahead-of-busy-memorial-day-weekend-fill-up-early-in-the-week\">advised<\/a> folks traveling through Massachusetts. \u201cFill up close to home and early in the week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan at GasBuddy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/life\/2022\/05\/gas-prices-for-memorial-day-2022-will-be-highest-they-have-ever-been.html\">made similar remarks<\/a>, according to Patriot-News in Pennsylvania on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith more Americans planning to hit the road for Memorial Day this year compared to last, prices will be over $1.50 per gallon higher than last year,\u201d De Haan said.<\/p>\n<p>De Haan believes that the answer to these problems can be solved in part by Americans driving less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough, prices are appearing to slow down, for now,\u201d he added. \u201cWhile the coast isn\u2019t clear yet, and prices will be at their highest Memorial Day level ever, I\u2019m hopeful that we could avoid a dreaded national average of $5 per gallon this year. Whether or not we\u2019re able to depends on Americans cutting demand in the face of sky high prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to offset gasoline prices, the Department of Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/usa-oil-spr\/u-s-to-sell-up-to-40-1-mln-bbls-crude-oil-from-spr-idINFWN2XG0VR\">announced<\/a> Tuesday that the U.S. \u201cwas selling up to 40.1 million barrels of crude oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve as part of a previous announcement by the administration.\u201dIn April, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/tom-cotton-biden-strategic-oil-reserves-poll-numbers\">slammed<\/a> the administration\u2019s decision to use strategic oil reserves to provide brief, temporary reprieve from prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[We don\u2019t have] the Strategic Petroleum Reserve \u2026 to float\u00a0Joe Biden\u2019s terrible poll numbers and try to help the Democrats limp into a midterm election,\u201d Cotton said at the time to Fox News host Laura Ingraham. \u201cThis is not just a gimmick \u2014 it\u2019s dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if, say, Iran, emboldened by a terrible nuclear deal, strikes refineries or production facilities in places like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or the United Arab Emirates? What if a major hurricane hits Louisiana and Texas this year?
