Nearly every piece of climate legislation championed by Democrats, from cap-and-trade to Green New Deal, has been a <em>deliberate<\/em>\u00a0effort to make energy less affordable, either by creating scarcity through fabricated markets and inhibiting fossil fuel production (banning fracking or stripping leases) or by trying to spike prices through gas taxes and mandating expensive alternative sources. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-3cb58943-0fdc-436f-ae8a-d67ca7f9b87f\">In 2020, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.com\/climate-plan\/\">promised<\/a> a \u201c100% clean energy economy\u201d with \u201cnet-zero emissions\u201d in only a few decades. And like environmentalists have for decades, he ignored the huge destructive tradeoffs such a strategy would require. Among the very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/interactives\/2021\/interactive_biden-first-day-executive-orders\/\">first things<\/a> Biden did was rejoin the Paris agreement, revoke permits to build the Keystone XL \u2014 a pipeline that was marked to carry approximately 800,000 barrels of oil a day into the United States \u2014 and sign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/27\/biden-suspends-oil-and-gas-drilling-in-series-of.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a slew of executive orders<\/a>\u00a0prioritizing climate change over energy production, halting new oil and natural gas leases on all public lands.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-830042ab-dbda-4801-ba2a-5d6cc48c671f\">When a court blocked the Biden lease plan, the administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/biden-administration-appeals-federal-court-decision-block-oil-gas-leasing-pause-2021-08-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appealed<\/a>\u00a0the decision, even though there were indications that energy prices were already rising.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-d0b23ee2-75b6-415a-b789-0df9b104958b\">Policies that undermine future production are baked into today\u2019s prices. The administration and media tell us that Keystone wouldn\u2019t make any difference in the oil prices, but then turn around and argue that we should overhaul the world\u2019s largest energy grid, create millions of solar panels, rid the nation of most existing cars, retrofit nearly every building in the country, and ask us not to treat them as if they\u2019re not insane. Reminder: merely to\u00a0<em>keep pace<\/em>\u00a0with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s recommendations on carbon emissions, Americans would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/the-coronavirus-economy-is-a-preview-of-the-green-new-deal-economy\/\">compelled<\/a> to implement pandemic level economic shutdowns every year for 30 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The great \u201ctransition\u201d from modernity is happening, and yet, Democrats aren\u2019t celebrating. Reporters aren\u2019t asking liberals why they aren\u2019t cheering on these high energy prices. When Biden\u2019s old boss Barack Obama was asked whether high gas prices were beneficial for the American economy, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-campaign-spot\/obama-gas-prices-i-would-have-preferred-gradual-adjustment-jim-geraghty\/\">told us<\/a>, \u201cI think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment.\u201d That was 15 years ago. We\u2019ve spent billions trying to make green energy a thing every year since then, and have been for decades, and yet we still\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/us-energy-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">derive only 12 percent of our energy from renewables<\/a> \u2013 and <em>within<\/em> those renewables, only 11 percent from solar, the source most talked about by Malthusians. Around 63 percent of our renewable energy comes from useful geothermal, hydroelectric, and biomass sources.<\/p>\n<p>You might also be old enough to remember Obama\u2019s energy secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2012\/02\/chus-europe-gas-price-quip-still-haunts-obama-073138\">saying<\/a> the goal was \u201cto boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.\u201d Europe has instituted burdensome centralized regulatory schemes to intentionally inflate carbon energy prices to fight climate change. While the United States has some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/263492\/electricity-prices-in-selected-countries\/\">lowest<\/a> energy costs in the industrial world, Denmark, Germany, Britain, and Belgium have the highest per household in the world \u2014 seven of the top 10 of the world\u2019s priciest energy markets can be found in Europe. The difference between what Americans pay and what Europeans pay is stark. Democrats seem intent on rectifying the situation.<\/p>\n<p>We are also likely looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/jazz-shaw\/2022\/05\/23\/its-not-just-electricity-were-heading-for-shortages-of-diesel-jet-fuel-and-gasoline-n471325\">shortages<\/a> of diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline on the horizon. While our ruling class obsesses over slight variations in the temperature \u2014 our globetrotting Climate Czar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/davos-meeting-ukraine-energy-idAFL9N2K200R\">is in<\/a> Davos as we speak \u2014 Americans will be paying exorbitant energy bills to keep their homes cool.\u00a0We\u2019ve been browbeaten and scaremongered into accepting a \u201cclean energy\u201d future that is tethered to inefficient, expensive sources that only exist because of state mandates and subsidies. <\/p>\n<p>Most of the progress made on lowering carbon emissions has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/news-policy-and-issues\/blog\/2021\/07\/12\/eight-points-natural-gas-reducing-emissions-and-environment\">due<\/a> to natural gas and technological efficacies in existing technology.\u00a0(Adaptability is a far cheaper, more useful, and more reasonable strategy. We\u2019ve been doing it for 200,000 years, give or take. The Department of Energy recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/biden-administration-launches-35-billion-program-capture-carbon-pollution-air-0\">released<\/a> $3.5 billion to fund direct air capture technologies that remove carbon dioxide, which likely do more in the long run than all the choo-choo trains or windmills.)<\/p>\n<p>In any event, the upside of fossil fuels \u2013 cheap, portable, abundant \u2013 far outweighs the negatives of climate change. Economies would collapse without them. And for emerging nations, affordable fossil fuel remains a prerequisite for lifting billions of people out of poverty. And yet here is the president of the United States celebrating the \u201ctransition\u201d away from affordable energy in the middle of an economic shock.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">\n  David Harsanyi is a senior editor at The Federalist.
