Gretchen Whitmer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bureau charged that neither Craig nor businessman Perry Johnson\u00a0submitted enough valid petition signatures and thousands of signatures they and others submitted were invalid. Craig, an African American who supported Second Amendment rights while fighting crime as Detroit\u2019s top cop, is the GOP\u2019s best-known candidate. Johnson is its best-funded. If the board\u2019s ruling sticks, half of the 10 candidates seeking to run for governor wouldn\u2019t make the ballot, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/05\/23\/james-craig-perry-johnson-shouldnt-make-ballot-michigan-gubernatorial-primary-state-bureau-elections\/9895349002\/\">The Detroit News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(T)he Bureau did not fully process the challenge because the number of signatures removed from the total after the review of fraudulent-petition circulators were such that Mr. Craig was already far below the minimum threshold for ballot access,\u201d the bureau of Craig\u2019s signatures.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">State elections report: James Craig and Perry Johnson filed too few signatures for ballot <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9t5uBaJ2Gz\">https:\/\/t.co\/9t5uBaJ2Gz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Detroit Free Press (@freep) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/freep\/status\/1528892494259359747?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 24, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Three other GOP candidates financial adviser Michael Markey, Michigan State Police Capt. Michael Brown, and entrepreneur Donna Brandenburg, were also recommended for disqualification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The bureau said petition circulators \u201csubmitted fraudulent petition sheets consisting entirely of invalid signatures,\u201d and said as many as 68,000\u00a0signatures were deemed invalid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Craig, 65, is seen as the GOP frontrunner to take on Whitmer in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a fighter, always been a fighter,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox2detroit.com\/news\/james-craig-on-his-campaign-signatures-woes-and-whats-next-for-michigan-gubernatorial-race\">Craig told Fox 2<\/a>\u00a0after the report came out. \u201cMichigan wants something different. I know, everyone else knows, I was the GOP candidate that would have upset the incumbent,\u201d Craig told FOX 2 following the report from the bureau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Johnson, 74, runs a quality control auditing company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">John Yob, a consultant for Johnson, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/05\/23\/james-craig-perry-johnson-shouldnt-make-ballot-michigan-gubernatorial-primary-state-bureau-elections\/9895349002\/\">The Detroit News<\/a> the bureau didn\u2019t have the right to unilaterally void every single signature obtained by the alleged forgers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe strongly believe they are\u00a0refusing to count thousands of signatures from legitimate voters who signed the petitions and look forward to winning this fight before the board, and if necessary, in the courts,\u201d Yob said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Board of State Canvassers, which includes two Democrats and two Republicans, will consider the bureau\u2019s findings on Thursday. It would take three to buck the bureau\u2019s recommendation and keep one or more of the candidates on the ballot, according to the Michigan Secretary of State\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan Democrats challenged the candidates\u2019 petitions, each of which was required to contain 15,000 valid signatures from registered voters.\u00a0Craig\u2019s campaign submitted about 21,000 petition signatures, but Democrats claimed to have uncovered thousands of forged signatures and other defects in his petition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Craig campaign lawyer Edward Greim blamed the fraudulent signatures on circulators hired to help the campaign qualify, and said the petition should not be thrown out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cDespite the potential efforts of a group of circulators to defraud the campaign, it is our belief that the petition remains valid,\u201d Greim wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/05\/11\/craig-campaign-claim-fraudulent-signatures-troubling\/9734937002\/\">May 9 court filing<\/a>. \u201cThat is because most of the technical challenges fail, and a signature comparison will likely show that the circulators did not write in<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Michigan gubernatorial election was thrown into chaos Monday night when the state\u00a0Bureau of Elections recommended barring two top Republicans, including former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, from running to replace Democrat Gov.
