As Thomas Jefferson asserted in The Declaration of Independence,\u00a0\u201cGovernments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When officials throughout American history have lost that consent, the governed have indeed let them know.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four politicians who betrayed their voters \u2014 and paid dearly for it.<\/p>\n<p>George H.W. Bush \u2014 No New Taxes<\/p>\n<p>In his keynote address at the 1988 Republican National Convention, George H. W. Bush vowed that the American people would not need to fork over more of their hard-earned savings to fund the federal government. That promise would come back to haunt Bush as he sought reelection four years later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m the one who will not raise taxes,\u201d As Bush <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanrhetoric.com\/speeches\/georgehbush1988rnc.htm\">declared in 1988.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy opponent now says he\u2019ll raise them as a last resort, or a third resort. But when a politician talks like that, you know that\u2019s one resort he\u2019ll be checking into. My opponent won\u2019t rule out raising taxes. But I will. And the Congress will push me to raise taxes, and I\u2019ll say no, and they\u2019ll push, and I\u2019ll say no, and they\u2019ll push again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, the famous last words. \u201cRead my lips: No new taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the promise brought Bush a resounding victory over Democratic opponent Michael Dukakis \u2014 who the Republicans painted as a tax-and-spend liberal \u2014 Bush was forced to handle massive budget deficits by compromising with the Democrat-controlled Congress to increase taxes in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cno new taxes\u201d line contributed to President Bill Clinton\u2019s victory in the election of 1992 \u2014 and forever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/how-george-h-w-bushs-broken-no-new-taxes-pledge-changed-american-politics-and-policy-forever\">changed the direction<\/a> of Republican politics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newt Gingrich, a congressman who led an unsuccessful revolt against Bush\u2019s budget deal, ascended to Speaker<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The American experiment began two and a half centuries ago with the adamant claim that no man has the inherent right to occupy any given political office.
