The White House\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/05\/12\/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-additional-steps-to-address-infant-formula-shortage\/\">website<\/a> explains that on February 17, Abbott Nutrition \u201cinitiated a voluntary recall of several lines of powdered formula\u201d from its facility in Sturgis, Michigan, amid concerns over bacterial contamination. Federal agencies have been working \u201cdiligently over the last few months to address the shortfall in infant formula production\u201d while the plant remains shuttered, according to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Ford said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/05\/21\/abbott-ceo-robert-ford-formula-elevil\/\">Washington Post<\/a> opinion piece that his firm takes \u201cgreat pride in manufacturing nutrition and formula to feed America\u2019s infants, including our most vulnerable\u201d \u2014 but recognized that \u201cthe past few months have distressed us as they have you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so I want to say: We\u2019re sorry to every family we\u2019ve let down since our voluntary recall exacerbated our nation\u2019s baby formula shortage,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe our voluntary recall was the right thing to do,\u201d Ford continued. \u201cWe will not take risks when it comes to the health of children. The data collected during the investigation, genetic sequencing, retained product samples and available product from the four complaints did not find any connection between our products and the four reported illnesses in children. However, the FDA\u2019s investigation did discover a bacteria in our plant that we will not tolerate. I have high expectations of this company, and we fell short of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford especially mourned the shortage of EleCare \u2014 a formula for children who are unable to digest other products \u2014 and vowed to prioritize its production once manufacturing resumes.
