Similar claims went viral on Twitter, with at least <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Saadia___M\/status\/1527295336515252230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/x0E1h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">versions<\/a> being retweeted thousands of times.<\/p>\n<p>The claim is misleading. Last week, nearly all House Republicans voted in favor of a bill that would loosen regulations around what types and brands of formula can be purchased under the federal WIC food assistance program, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/05\/19\/senate-passes-stabenow-bill-address-baby-formula-shortage\/9846223002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Detroit News<\/a>. Only nine House Republicans voted against the measure. Those nine included Georgia Rep. Marjorie Greene and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/nine-republicans-vote-baby-formula-1708062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newsweek<\/a>. Greene remarked on her podcast \u201cReal America\u2019s Voice\u201d that the WIC was actually a \u201ckey problem\u201d in the shortage.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/edlabor.house.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Fact%20Sheet%20-%20Access%20to%20Baby%20Formula%20Act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fact-sheet<\/a> from the House Education and Labor Committee states the bill grants the U.S. Department of Agriculture the ability to waive requirements so \u201cvulnerable families can continue purchasing safe infant formula\u201d with their benefits. <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/05\/19\/fact-check-enfamil-similac-program-free-baby-formula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>(RELATED: Will Enfamil And Similac Have The State Send Free baby Formula To Those Who Need It?)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most House Republicans did oppose a bill that passed in the House May 18 that would give $28 million to the FDA to address the shortage, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/05\/19\/house-baby-formula-shortage-emergency-spending-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Axios<\/a>. Republicans claimed it\u00a0would not help address the shortage, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/05\/19\/republicans-baby-formula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post<\/a>. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise told the outlet the bill was written with the intent of \u201ccovering up the administration\u2019s ineptitude by throwing additional money at the FDA with no plan to actually fix the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/minutes\/congress\/05-17-2022\/movement-on-formula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> the bill did not clarify how the funds would be used to stop the immediate shortage.
