Gen. Roger L. Cloutier, a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) commander.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Verdict: False<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence to suggest Cloutier has been captured by Russian forces. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) denied the claim. The video shows a militant who was arrested in Crimea in March, according to the Russian news outlet RIA.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Russian forces claim to have successfully captured the Ukrainian city of Mariupol following a three-month-long siege, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-kyiv-prisoners-of-war-71d0dfb842caaaad30b92671637c1f3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a>. A post shared on Facebook claims the Russians found <a href=\"https:\/\/lc.nato.int\/about-us\/biographies\/commander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cloutier<\/a>, a NATO general in charge of Allied Land Command, among those attempting to flee the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeneral Roger L. Cloutier, was formerly a head of US Africa Command, now a NATO army commander was captured under the guise of a refugee trying to escape Mariupol,\u201d reads the post\u2019s caption. \u201cIn this video, he is been seen escorted by an FSB agent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video featured in the post shows a man with his face blurred out being escorted from a van into a building by two Russian soldiers. <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/04\/19\/fact-check-david-axelrod-arrest-military\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>(RELATED: Was David Axelrod Arrested By The Military?)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>These claims are incorrect. An internet search reveals the video included in the post was shared by the Russian news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/ria.ru\/20220407\/zaderzhanie-1782232107.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RIA<\/a> in March with a caption that indicated the man detained was a member of an anti-Russian militant group based in Crimea. The article alleges the man was arrested for being a part of this illegal group. It makes no mention of Cloutier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is likewise no evidence that Cloutier has been captured in Ukraine. N<span>ATO has not issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/press_releases.htm?query=Cloutier&#038;keywordquery=*&#038;date_from=dd.mm.yyyy&#038;date_to=dd.mm.yyyy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a> about such a development. There are no credible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=U.S.+general+arreested+Ukrainer&#038;oq=U.S.+general+arreested+Ukrainer&#038;aqs=chrome..69i57.6191j0j1&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news reports<\/a> suggesting a NATO general has been arrested in Ukraine. The verified NATO Allied Land Command Facebook page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LANDCOMNATO\/posts\/pfbid05BPz33BmiXYm2hpTc5XcsXgtBXckCKwt9H47Cd67Z9VVtwPwe5DFqx9QsXsHRMXnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted<\/a> a May 23 picture of Cloutier standing with a Turkish ambassador at the command\u2019s headquarters in <a href=\"https:\/\/lc.nato.int\/about-us\/history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Izmir, Turkey<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the claim was false in an email to Check Your Fact.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time NATO has been the subject of misinformation surrounding its involvement in Ukraine.
