The episode started with a Disclaimer saying it was filmed prior to the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony, which was when Smith slapped Chris Rock across the face.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t say nothin\u2019 \u2018bout my mother, Dave,\u201d Smith teases Letterman at one point during the episode.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the 53-year-old actor talked about his childhood and how it still affects him. Smith said he goes into detail about certain events in his upcoming memoir, \u201cWill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first line of the first chapter is, \u2018I\u2019ve always thought of myself as a coward,\u201d the actor told Letterman. \u201cWhen I was nine years old, I saw my father beat up my mother, and I didn\u2019t do anything. And that just left a traumatic impression of myself as a coward.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife is so exciting to me right now, because I can reach people differently than I\u2019ve ever been able to reach people, largely because of my pain,\u201d he continued. \u201cI\u2019m really ready to dive into my art in a way that I think will be hopefully fulfilling for me and helpful for the human family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cPursuit of Happyness\u201d star also gave the former late night host some tips for defending his family. He said the \u201cmaterial world is completely, utterly, and totally incapable of sustaining our happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond the essentials of protecting yourself and your family,\u201d Letterman replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t protect your family, right?\u201d Smith countered. \u201cThat\u2019s not real. Protection and safety is an illusion.
