That\u2019s the only logical reason to explain why policy-makers have shown an ignorance, and incoherence, about the biggest issue facing American families.<\/p>\n<p>But if people in Washington can\u2019t understand, or care, when parents get crushed by skyrocketing food and gas bills, they may after November 8. The public outrage over inflation, and the left\u2019s bumbling responses to it, are <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/16\/polls-show-bidenflation-is-killing-democrats-with-minority-voters\/\">driving voters of all stripes away from Democrats<\/a> in droves.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Clueless Congress<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Politico <\/em>began a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/11\/inflation-roe-dems-connect-voters-00031602\">recent article<\/a> with an anecdote whereby leftist Rep. Katie Porter, D-California, tried to teach her Democratic colleagues about inflation, and they apparently responded like she was from Mars:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Only after Rep. Katie Porter put bacon in her cart at her local grocery store recently did she notice that its price had spiked to $9.99 a pound. Reluctantly, she put the package back.<\/p>\n<p>It was a dose of reality that Porter, a California progressive and single mother of three, has long understood. But she\u2019s not sure all of her Democratic colleagues share her interest in connecting to average Americans\u2019 experiences outside the Beltway.<\/p>\n<p>When Porter gave an emotional speech about how inflation has been hitting her family for months during a private House Democratic Caucus meeting last week, she said it seemed like the first time the personal toll of high consumer prices had sunk in for some lawmakers in the room.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This story seems shocking, but not altogether surprising. Members of Congress make $174,000 per year, with (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/commentary\/congress-illegal-egregious-obamacare-exemption-explained\">illegally<\/a>) subsidized health coverage and other benefits that many ordinary working Americans don\u2019t receive. That amount of annual household income is more than three times the U.S. median. So why would the average member of Congress know, let alone care, whether bacon costs $3.99 or $9.99 a pound?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Professorial Policy Seminars<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While some congressional offices express indifference towards the plight of American families, others have apparently resorted to lecturing constituents. The same Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/11\/inflation-roe-dems-connect-voters-00031602\">article<\/a> featured this anecdote from Capitol Hill: \u201cOne Democratic House office has received so many calls from a constituent complaining about the cost of bacon that she was connected to a policy aide to talk about why it was suddenly so expensive. But the woman had little interest in understanding the effects of meat consolidation. Instead, she simply urged the lawmaker\u2019s office to get the price down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Memo to Washington: When families are getting their proverbial teeth kicked in when they go to the grocery store every week, they don\u2019t want lectures on how \u201cevil\u201d pork producers are making \u201cexcessive\u201d profits. Or, to put it more simply, searching for a scapegoat won\u2019t solve the actual problem.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Biden Administration\u2019s Incoherence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Into that breach stepped President Biden\u2014who promptly got his tongue tied. The president <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden\/status\/1525234935346483210\">tweeted<\/a>: \u201cYou want to bring down inflation? Let\u2019s make sure the wealthiest corporations pay their fair share.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is perhaps unsurprising that Biden would tout as a \u201csolution\u201d for inflation the exact same policies he has promoted since he began running for president. But given that most studies indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/adammillsap\/2021\/04\/28\/higher-corporate-taxes-affect-everyone\/?sh=ad6a3cf6808e\">some portion<\/a> of corporate tax increases get passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices or lower wages, Biden\u2019s proposed \u201cfix\u201d would actually worsen the inflation squeeze on families.<\/p>\n<p>At her first official press conference as White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre was asked how Biden\u2019s proposal to raise corporate taxes would tame inflation. Suffice it to say that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2022\/05\/16\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-may-16-2022\/\">word salad that followed<\/a> should not inspire confidence in this administration\u2019s competence and knowledge of economic policy:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Q: But how does raising taxes on corporations lower the cost of gas, the cost of a used car, the cost of food for everyday Americans?<\/p>\n<p>MS. JEAN-PIERRE: So, look, I think we encourage those who have done very well \u2014 right? \u2014 especially those who care about climate change, to support a fairer tax \u2014 tax code that doesn\u2019t change \u2014 that doesn\u2019t charge manufacturers\u2019 workers, cops, builders a higher percentage of their earnings; that the most fortunate people in our nation \u2014 and not let the \u2014 that stand in the way of reducing energy costs and fighting this existential problem, if you think about that as an example, and to support basic collective bargaining rights as well.\u00a0Right?\u00a0That\u2019s also important.<br \/>But look, it is \u2014 you know, by not \u2014 if \u2014 without having a fairer tax code, which is what I\u2019m talking about, then all \u2014 every \u2014 like manufacturing workers, cops \u2014 you know, it\u2019s not fair for them to have to pay higher taxes than the folks that \u2014 who are \u2014 who are \u2014 who are not paying taxes at all or barely have.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While the question focused on inflation, the answer (such as it was) discussed climate change and collective bargaining\u2014topics only tangentially related to the price of goods.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Liberal Elitism<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The prototypical leftist response regarding the concerns of voters in America\u2019s heartland occurred nearly a decade and a half ago. While campaigning at a rural Iowa farm in July 2007, Barack Obama tried to \u201cempathize\u201d with the crowd by asking rhetorically: \u201cAnybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula? I mean, they\u2019re charging a lot of money for this stuff.\u201d The remark at a time the chi-chi grocer (which some call \u201cWhole Paycheck\u201d) did not even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/chinews-mtblog-2007-10-obama_talks_arugula_again_in_i-story.html\">operate an establishment<\/a> in the Hawkeye State.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats still haven\u2019t shown much of a clue about the needs, or lifestyle, of ordinary voters in the years since.
