It was not enough. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was forced to put the DGB on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/05\/18\/disinformation-board-dhs-nina-jankowicz\/\">pause<\/a>,\u201d and its director, Nina Jankowicz, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwmt.com\/news\/nation-world\/jankowicz-blames-boards-pause-on-disinformation-says-criticisms-of-it-were-incorrect-nina-ministry-truth-governance-board-department-homeland-security-chris-hayes-conspiracy-theories-lies\">resigned<\/a> under public pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Now DHS says it is \u201creviewing\u201d the board while \u201ccontinuing\u201d its \u201ccritical work\u2026to address disinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"798\" height=\"798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/homelandsecuritydisinfoboard.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-272750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/homelandsecuritydisinfoboard.jpg 798w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/homelandsecuritydisinfoboard-300x300-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/homelandsecuritydisinfoboard-200x200-1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/homelandsecuritydisinfoboard-768x768-1.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/disinfoboard-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-272751\" width=\"498\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/disinfoboard-1.jpg 905w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/disinfoboard-300x226-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/disinfoboard-768x578-1.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>No matter what happens with the board, it is hard to take Mayorkas\u2019s promise not to monitor Americans seriously. Several recent cases of the federal government spying on Americans as well as DHS\u2019s own actions were certain to make people skeptical.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in February of this year, DHS issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/ntas\/advisory\/national-terrorism-advisory-system-bulletin-february-07-2022\">National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Bulletin<\/a>, a memo prioritizing \u201cfalse or misleading narratives\u201d as a top domestic security threat. The bulletin states that \u201cthere is widespread online proliferation of false or misleading narratives regarding unsubstantiated widespread election fraud and COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This bulletin clearly referenced Americans inside our borders. Also, unlike with the DGB, DHS made no promise to not monitor Americans\u2019 speech. (My organization, the Center to Advance Security in America, submitted several Freedom of Information Act requests for records regarding the NTAS bulletin and the DGB.)<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget Carter Page, either. Page was an advisor to the Donald Trump 2016 campaign. In 2016-17 the government investigated him on suspicion of being an intermediary between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. A later inspector general\u2019s report identified \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/storage\/120919-examination.pdf\">at least 17 significant errors or omissions<\/a>\u201d in the application for a warrant to surveil Page. A Department of Justice attorney was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/a-pass-for-kevin-clinesmith-11611962556\">convicted<\/a> of falsifying a document that led to a Page warrant.<\/p>\n<p>Also recall the James Clapper spying scandal. Clapper, the director of national intelligence under President Obama, responded, \u201cNo, sir\u201d and \u201cnot wittingly,\u201d when asked at a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/03\/06\/four-different-lies-james-clapper-told-about-lying-to-congress\/\">Senate hearing<\/a> if the National Security Agency was collecting \u201cany type of data at all\u201d on millions of Americans without a specific warrant. About three months after making that claim, documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed Clapper\u2019s answer <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/03\/06\/four-different-lies-james-clapper-told-about-lying-to-congress\/\">was untruthful<\/a>, as the NSA was in fact collecting in bulk domestic call records, along with various internet communications.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the CIA spying scandal. Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, both members of the Senate Intelligence Committee who are privy to classified information, have warned about the existence of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyden.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/wyden-and-heinrich-newly-declassified-documents-reveal-previously-secret-cia-bulk-collection-problems-with-cia-handling-of-americans-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">secret bulk collection program that the CIA has operated<\/a>\u00a0\u201coutside the statutory framework that Congress and the public believe govern this collection,\u201d and without oversight by the courts or Congress.<\/p>\n<p>The secret program appears related to bulk data swept up by the CIA in terrorism operations, including information on Americans, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/static\/63f697addbbd30a4d64432ff28bbc6d6\/OPCL-PCLOB-Report-on-CIA-Activities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heavily blacked-out report<\/a>\u00a0from a CIA oversight board that was declassified at the urging of the two senators.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is Biden Attorney General Merrick Garland\u2019s infamous school board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ag\/page\/file\/1438986\/download\">memo<\/a>. The memo directed the FBI to involve itself in local school board meetings under the auspices of anti-terrorism statutes due to supposed threats and violence directed against board members.<\/p>\n<p>However, concerns that the FBI and DOJ were actually targeting the speech of parents were heightened, when, on October 14, 2021,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktvh.com\/news\/helena-news\/u-s-acting-attorney-for-montana-sends-letters-of-statues-to-state-law-enforcement\">another memo<\/a>, released by the U.S. attorney in Montana, directed law enforcement to \u201ccontact the FBI\u201d if a parent calls a member of a school board simply \u201cwith intent to annoy.\u201d He claimed that \u201cmay serve as a basis for a prosecution\u201d under federal law.<\/p>\n<p>Garland and the Biden Department of Justice and FBI were forced to disavow the latter memo, since it appeared to directly target simple and non-threatening speech. During testimony, Garland assured Congress the memo would not be used to target parents for policy disagreements. Yet information recently obtained from FBI whistleblowers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2022\/05\/fbi-investigated-concerned-parents.php\">indicates<\/a> the FBI had targeted and labeled dozens of investigations into parents with a threat tag, based on their associations and speech, including statements opposing mask and vaccine mandates.<\/p>\n<p>As if to pour fuel on this fire, the woman DHS chose to lead the DGB was proven to be a proud and vocal proponent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarkcountytoday.com\/news\/bidens-disinformation-czar-endorsed-government-censorship-of-speech\/\">censorship<\/a>. Jankowicz has a history of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/03\/6-dystopian-things-bidens-disinformation-board-pick-nina-jankowicz-has-done\/\">attaching the \u201cdisinformation<\/a>\u201d label to speech she doesn\u2019t like, regardless of its veracity.<\/p>\n<p>With a record like this, would you trust Mayorkas\u2019s promise that the DGB won\u2019t monitor the speech of the American people?
