Klain was referring to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/americans-economic-concerns-grow-opinion-poll-2022-05-22\/\">CBS News poll<\/a> which showed that Biden\u2019s approval rating ticked up slightly, and that a slight majority of voters are optimistic about the Biden administration\u2019s efforts in handling the COVID-19 pandemic and the job prospects in their community.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I hate to spoil the narrative but this poll shows <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@potus<\/a> approval rating moving up, and solid public confidence on the two biggest problems he inherited: COVID and jobs. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OPrkWPZxYO\">https:\/\/t.co\/OPrkWPZxYO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ronald Klain (@WHCOS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WHCOS\/status\/1528418302812471298?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are a number of problems with Klain\u2019s analysis of the poll. First, while Biden\u2019s approval ticked up two points from April to May, the poll has a margin of error of 2.5%, which means that increase is negligible.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the majorities who were optimistic about COVID and jobs were very slight. Meanwhile, the worst of the COVID pandemic has been over for months, and according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/22014966-nbc-news-may-poll\">other recent polls<\/a>, the pandemic as an issue is at the very bottom of voters\u2019 minds.<\/p>\n<p>Digging deeper, the CBS poll contains other numbers that spell trouble for the Biden administration. Large majorities of Americans described the state of the country as \u201cuneasy\u201d (63%), \u201cworrying\u201d (63%), or \u201cfrustrating\u201d (61%); 69% of Americans said the economy was bad, the highest number on record; nearly three-quarters of Americans, 74%, said things in America are going badly: 77% of Americans said they were concerned about the cost of goods and services; 68% were concerned about the national economy, and 67% about the stock market; 57% were concerned about their plans for retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents also soured on Biden\u2019s handling of key issues: his approval rating on the economy stood at just 36%, with 64% disapproval; on inflation, just 30%, with 70% disapproval; on Russia-Ukraine, 47% approval, 53% disapproval; on immigration and on crime, 40%-60%.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, a majority of Americans, 65% said that Biden is \u201ctoo slow to react\u201d when important issues come up; another majority, 55%, said that Biden does not fight hard to address the country\u2019s problems; and just 19% of respondents said that Biden cares about their needs and problems \u201ca lot.\u201d In contrast, 25% said Biden only cares \u201csome\u201d about their problems, 22% said \u201cnot much,\u201d and a plurality, 34%, said Biden does not care about their needs and problems at all.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, contrary to Klain\u2019s assertion, the CBS poll does not \u201cspoil the narrative\u201d around Biden\u2019s approval rating, which continues to collapse. A growing number of polls are showing that Biden\u2019s approval has dropped below 40%: an Associated Press\/NORC poll conducted last week had Biden\u2019s approval at just 39%, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-approval-rating-drops-ap-norc-poll-d41bce85e1b062b588a32908b2affa65\">lowest of his presidency<\/a>; an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investors.com\/politics\/ibdtipp-poll-presidential-approval-direction-of-country\/\">IBD\/TIPP<\/a> poll earlier this month also had his approval at 39%, as did a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/polling-institute\/reports\/monmouthpoll_US_051222\/\">Monmouth<\/a> poll; recent polling from <a href=\"https:\/\/civiqs.com\/results\/approve_president_biden?uncertainty=true&#038;annotations=true&#038;zoomIn=true\">Civiqs<\/a> showed Biden at just 34%, and underwater in 47 out of 50 states; a <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3846\">Quinnipiac<\/a> poll showed him with an approval rating of just 35%, while also showing that his support among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-cratering-with-hispanics-support-less-than-half-of-2021-poll\">Hispanics<\/a> is less than half of what it was in 2021. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/biden-approval-rating\/\">FiveThirtyEight<\/a>, Biden\u2019s average approval rating is at the lowest of his presidency, at 40.7%.
