Wade\u00a0<\/em>it will open the door to restricting contraception and marriage rights.<\/p>\n<p>Harris made the statement in a Twitter post ahead of the Supreme Court\u2019s pending case that could return laws regarding abortion to individual states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe right to privacy that forms the basis of Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0is genuine,\u201d Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhilipWegmann\/status\/1521529917674070018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0ensures a woman\u2019s right to choose to have an abortion. It. Also, at its root, protects the fundamental right to privacy,\u201d Harris continued. \u201cWhat is clear is that the opponents of\u00a0<em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0want to punish women and take away their rights to make decisions about their own bodies. Republican legislators in states across the country are weaponizing the use of the law against women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rights of all Americans are at risk. If the right to privacy is weakened, every person could face a future in which the government can potentially interfere in the personal decisions you make about your life. This is the time to fight for women and for our country with everything you have,\u201d Harris concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The leak of an early draft of a Supreme Court majority opinion that indicated Roe v. Wade would likely be struck down was first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by Politico on May 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hold that\u00a0<i>Roe<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Casey<\/i>\u00a0must be overruled,\u201d Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the document, labeled as the \u201cOpinion of the Court.\u201d \u201cIt is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people\u2019s elected representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leaked draft also shows that Alito called\u00a0<em>Roe\u00a0<\/em>wrong from the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Roe<\/i> was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences.
