Delta airlines removed the 4-year college degree requirement in January, saying qualified fliers don&#8217;t need a bachelor\u2019s degree if they have relevant flight experience.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Representatives from companies like Delta, American, and United have submitted requests to the Federal Aviation Administration to hire pilots with 750 flight hours instead of the customary 1,500. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>For airline industry figures like Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, the adjustment could be the answer to the pilot shortage. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>\u201cThe pilot shortage for the industry is real, and most airlines are simply not going to be able to realize their capacity plans because there simply aren\u2019t enough pilots, at least not for the next five-plus years,\u201d Kirby said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/15\/us-pilot-shortage-forces-airlines-to-cut-flights-scramble-for-solutions.html\">quarterly-earnings call<\/a> last month. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>United Airlines isn\u2019t the only company feeling the pressure. In a recent video posted to YouTube, Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci apologized to customers. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>\u201cI hear every day from friends, neighbors and guests about how disruptive our flight cancellations have been. Everybody wants to know\u2014what happened? And what are we doing about it? Simply put, we had 63 fewer pilots than we planned for when we built our schedule.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Minicucci explained that of the 1,200 flights Alaska Airlines operates daily, about 50 of them are canceled, accounting for about 4% of total flights. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Legislators are also looking into the problem.
