The Justice Department will continue to use every resource at its disposal to confront unlawful acts of hate, and to hold accountable those who perpetrate them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Establishment media reports of violence against Asian Americans spiked since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, one Kentucky State University professor scoured publicly available information on around 100 attacks on Asians reported by the police between 2020 and 2021 and determined that in over 60 percent of the cases the suspect was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/attacks-on-asians-not-white-supremacy-just-thugs-researcher-says_3752269.html\">identified as black<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, hate crimes are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.policechiefmagazine.org\/the-hate-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">underreported<\/a> with most victims, especially immigrants, hesitant to go to authorities. Reliable national data on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-anti-asian\">anti-Asian<\/a> hate crimes is also scarce.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ\u2019s announcement comes on the one-year anniversary of the enactment of\u00a0the COVID-19 Hate Crimes and Khalid Jabara-Heather Heyer NO HATE Acts. Since January 2021, the DOJ has said it has secured more than 35 convictions of defendants charged with \u201cbias-motivated crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ defined a hate crime as a crime that is \u201cmotivated by bias against race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or disability.\u201d The most common form, nearly 30 percent, is vandalism or property damage.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are now more crimes considered bias-related or hate crimes.<\/p>\n<p>There has also been a national campaign of billboards, outdoor ads, radio streaming, and social media ads, along with conferences,\u00a0resources, and training to help the community and law enforcement identify them.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ said it has gone \u201cabove and beyond\u201d its remit under the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act and expedited \u201cthe review of certain hate crimes by including additional types of hate crimes.\u201d It included a full list of its actions to combat hate crimes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-announces-new-initiatives-address-and-prevent-hate-crimes-and-hate\">in a release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>HHS Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said that amid a \u201cspike in hate crimes against many communities\u201d during the pandemic some people were still afraid to leave their homes \u201cout of fear for their physical safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Becerra, who also co-chairs the White House Initiative and President\u2019s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, said the Biden administration was committed to \u201ccombatting hate crimes against all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"author_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"one_author_block round\">\n<div class=\"top_row\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/author-caden-pearson\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/38ce23ace09f12718ad757e5cb92eca2\" alt=\"Caden Pearson\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Follow<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Caden Pearson is a journalist based in Australia.
