Russia and and ally Belarus previously produced 40% of the world\u2019s potash, one of the key ingredients for fertilizer. Russia is also a key producer of\u00a0urea and ammonium nitrate. Before the war, Russia and Ukraine combined to export 28% of fertilizers made from nitrogen and phosphorous, as well as potassium, according to Morgan Stanley.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>Noe-Hayes\u2019 Vermont-based institute operates the country\u2019s first\u00a0community-scale urine recycling program and was researching the pros and cons of replacing chemical fertilizers with pee before the war-driven shortage. While human pee might not be the immediate answer, but Noe-Hayes believes it is a long-term win all around.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>The nutrients in urine cause environmental problems when they enter the wastewater system, according to USA Today. Since they cannot be completely removed, they end up in waterways where they cause\u00a0<a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2022\/03\/31\/runaway-pollution-climate-change-threaten-u-s-lakes-and-rivers\/7172227001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t=\"{\" n>harmful algal blooms<\/a>. Using the nutrient-rich urine to help crops grow is a better alternative, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>Urine is the ultimate sustainable solution, according to Noe-Hayes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>\u201cWe can\u2019t stop making it and it has to go somewhere. So why not have it go where it\u2019s useful?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>University of Michigan researcher Nancy Love has\u00a0been studying urine-treatment technologies and people\u2019s perception of pee-based fertilizers as part of a <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1639244&#038;HistoricalAwards=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t=\"{\" n>$3 million grant<\/a>\u00a0awarded in 2016 by the National Science Foundation, USA Today reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>She believes when people\u2019s attitudes change and technology improves, pee fertilizer will become mainstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>\u201cIt\u2019ll be longer term than short term,\u201d Love said, \u201cbut we have to be doing the work now to get us there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>In the meantime, if you want to go take a leak in the garden, here are some handy tips from\u00a0<a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"http:\/\/richearthinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/UrineMyGarden_DIYGuide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t=\"{\" n>Rich Earth Institute\u2019s guide<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-list-slot\">\n<ul>\n<li data-t=\"{\" n><strong>Collect your urine in a sealable and airtight container:\u00a0<\/strong>Add white vinegar or citric acid to the container before storing the urine to lessen the odor.<\/li>\n<li data-t=\"{\" n><strong>Sanitize:\u00a0<\/strong>If you intend to share your crops, sanitize your urine by storing it in an airtight container at 68\u00b0F\u00a0or higher for six months. You don\u2019t need to sanitize the pee if no one outside the home is going to eat the crops.<\/li>\n<li data-t=\"{\" n><strong>Fertilize\u00a0your crops:\u00a0<\/strong>Apply the urine directly to the ground, not as a spray.
