He allegedly had two other hostages who were able to run when Hartless show DiSario, the Newark Advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarkadvocate.com\/story\/news\/local\/2017\/05\/12\/active-shooter-reported-kirkersville\/101587810\/\">reported<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew when I heard \u2018shots fired\u2019 on the radio,\u201d that his son was dead, DiSario <a href=\"https:\/\/www.10tv.com\/article\/news\/local\/father-murdered-kirkersville-police-chief-told-to-remove-police-flag-from-front-yard\/530-bee6b211-60ae-4cb0-abc8-c414ff9e8e61\">told<\/a> WBNS.<\/p>\n<p>DiSario went to the hospital to identify his son, where he \u201cbroke down\u201d and said goodbye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe point I seen him,\u201d DiSario told the outlet. \u201cSeen what that murderer did to him I just broke down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ever since that day, DiSario has flown a police flag in his yard to honor his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, that represents my son,\u201d he told WBNS.<\/p>\n<p>For just over five years, the flag has been flown without incident, but suddenly, just a day after the five-year anniversary of his son\u2019s death, DiSario received a notice on behalf of his neighborhood\u2019s Homeowner\u2019s Association (HOA) that he needed to remove the flag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have told me in this letter that it\u2019s propaganda,\u201d DiSario told WBNS.<\/p>\n<p>The Advocate reported that DiSario was brought to tears when he received the letter, dated May 13, from the Omni Community Association Managers telling the father that flying the flag violated community restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe political sign in the form of a flag must be removed from your property. The flag on your pole is not a United States Flag,\u201d the letter said. \u201cIt is a political statement. Please remove the flag from your property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DiSario and his wife received the flag from the police association in 2017, and have only removed it when it became worn out and needed to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, when I saw the letter that people are fighting me over something very valuable to me and personal, I broke down and cried,\u201d DiSario told the Advocate. \u201cThat\u2019s how much it meant to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WBNS asked DiSario if he viewed the flag as political.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he responded. \u201cUnder no way, shape or form. The life of my son. Something that I can get up in the morning and look at and remember my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Omni told the outlet that DiSario had agreed to not display political signs when he signed his deed and that they are merely an enforcer of the rules.
