The FDA is working to reopen an Abbott Nutrition plant in Michigan and is taking steps to ease the formula shortage.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. is currently in the midst of an infant formula shortage, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR<\/a>. A viral Facebook post claims Gates may be behind the shortage. \u201cLook another coincidence,\u201d reads the post.\u00a0\u201cFDA won\u2019t let formula plant reopen but Bill Gates opens a synthetic breastmilk plant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The claim is false. While the Gates-founded venture capitalist group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughenergy.org\/our-story\/our-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Breakthrough Energy Ventures<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbiotech.org\/news\/biomilq-raises-35-million-infant-nutrition-alternative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invested<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biomilq.com\/our-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIOMILQ<\/a>, a company that is researching synthetic breastmilk, there is no evidence the company or Gates has opened a plant to produce synthetic breastmilk. The company has not announced the opening of a synthetic breastmilk plant on its <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=plant%20(from%3A%40biomilq)&#038;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/page\/108730450634292\/search\/?q=new%20plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/biomilq\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accounts<\/a> or through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biomilq.com\/our-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.
