Sussmann is accused of lying to a top FBI official during a September 2016 meeting in which he made false claims about a purported backchannel between the Trump Organization and Russia\u2019s Alfa-Bank.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2016 presidential election, Mook served as former Clinton\u2019s campaign manager. Sussmann was then an attorney at Perkins Coie, which contracted with the Clinton campaign as its general counsel.<\/p>\n<p>During his Friday testimony, Mook said that Clinton herself approved sharing the false claims against the Trump Organization and former President Donald Trump with the media, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/hillary-clinton-approved-trump-russian-bank-allegations-sussmann-trial\">Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mook said that at the time, the campaign knew the evidence against Trump was shaky, but campaign officials thought a reporter could investigate and potentially substantiate the claims. He said he discussed the issue at the time with Campaign Chairman John Podesta, Senior Policy Advisor Jake Sullivan, and Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri.<\/p>\n<p>Mook also ran the plan by Clinton, who signed off pushing the collusion claims despite the relatively weak evidence. Mook <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JFHaughey58\/status\/1527689556803342336\">said<\/a> that he and other top campaign officials agreed not to alert the FBI to claims because of the shaky basis, however.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI discussed it with Hillary as well,\u201d Mook testified. \u201cI don\u2019t remember the substance of the conversation, but notionally, the discussion was, hey, we have this and we want to share it with a reporter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe agreed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The admission speaks to special counsel John Durham\u2019s theory of the case, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/sco\/press-release\/file\/1433511\/download\">posits<\/a> that the false Alfa-Bank claims were pushed by the Clinton campaign in order to hurt her political opponent at the time, Trump. The theory continues that Sussmann lied to the FBI in order to spark an investigation that could make the Alfa-Bank story more palatable to the press.<\/p>\n<p>At another point in his testimony, Mook also read off an October 31, 2016, tweet from Clinton\u2019s account featuring a statement from Sullivan, was at that time her senior policy adviser. The tweet and statement was touting a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/cover_story\/2016\/10\/was_a_server_registered_to_the_trump_organization_communicating_with_russia.html\">story<\/a> from Slate that had come out earlier that day reporting on the alleged connection between the Trump Organization and Alfa-Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComputer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank,\u201d Clinton said in the tweet. Mook <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adamgoldmanNYT\/status\/1527681904425807872\">testified<\/a> that he did not know if Clinton drafted the tweet herself.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Computer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8f8n9xMzUU\">pic.twitter.com\/8f8n9xMzUU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HillaryClinton\/status\/793250312119263233?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 1, 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Clinton tweet was thought to be excluded from the trial. Judge Christopher Cooper had blocked the tweet from coming in as evidence in pretrial arguments between prosecutors and defense attorneys.
