Under Pennsylvania law, an automatic recount will occur as long as the candidates finish between 0.5% of one another or less \u2014 or if the runner-up candidate officially declines the recount.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Oz has 31.2% of Republican primary voters, while McCormick has 31.1% \u2014 placing the two candidates within 0.1% of each other. Kathy Barnette \u2014 the conservative commentator who experienced a surge in the final days of the race \u2014 is effectively out of contention with 24.7% of the Republican electorate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Politico reported that the two campaigns are preparing for \u201ctrench warfare that could drag out for weeks\u201d in the media and the courts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe chances of a recount are 100 percent and no less,\u201d Pennsylvania Republican consultant Josh Novotney told the outlet. \u201cThere\u2019s still votes coming in. It will probably get even tighter than it is now, which is almost humanly impossible. Each side will definitely be wanting any slight edge they can get going into a recount.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Both campaigns are therefore lawyering up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Oz \u2014 who received an endorsement<\/span> <span> from former President Donald Trump \u2014 tapped James Fitzpatrick, who led Pennsylvania\u2019s Election Day operations for Trump, to help navigate the vote count process. McCormick enlisted former Trump campaign and administration officials Mike Roman, James Schultz, and David Urban, as well as veteran Republican attorney Chuck Cooper. The McCormick campaign is also seeking to hire 300 vote counters with paid travel, a rental car, and $125 per day to watch possible recounts through the Vanguard Field Strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pennsylvania Department of State spokeswoman Grace Griffaton told Politico on Thursday evening that based upon \u201ca comparison of vote totals to Republican ballots returned and information we received from counties throughout the afternoon,\u201d there are 8,700 Republican mail-in and absentee ballots that have not yet been counted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trump urged Oz to claim the win even though many votes remain to be tallied. \u201cDr. Oz should declare victory. It makes it much harder for them to cheat with the ballots that they \u2018just happened to find,\u2019\u201d Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/18\/trump-dr-oz-should-declare-victory-pennsylvania-00033420\"><span>claimed<\/span><\/a><span> on Truth Social, his social media company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Oz was the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pennsylvania-gop-senate-primary-might-be-two-way-contest-between-oz-and-barnette-poll-suggests\"><span>polarizing<\/span><\/a><span> Republican candidate in the Senate primary, according to an Emerson College poll taken ahead of the election. Although he is leading the race, 48% of Republicans reported a \u201csomewhat or strongly unfavorable opinion\u201d of Oz. Republicans had a 32% unfavorable view of McCormick and a 28% unfavorable view of Barnette.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Oz or McCormick will face Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, the winner of the Democratic Senate primary, in November. Fetterman \u2014 who is known for sporting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pennsylvania-democrats-pick-basketball-shorts-and-hoodie-clad-john-fetterman-over-rising-star-conor-lamb-in-senate-primary\"><span>basketball shorts and hoodies<\/span><\/a><span> at campaign events \u2014 defeated U.S. Congressman and Democratic rising star Conor Lamb in his party\u2019s primary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The victor of the general election will succeed Sen. Pat Toomey, a Republican who is retiring after two terms in the Senate.
