Dave Joyce introduced a resolution Thursday to find out all information about the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s (DHS) recently paused \u201cDisinformation Governance Board,\u201d which was set to be led by Nina Jankowicz.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller first obtained the resolution, which Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds has co-sponsored. The resolution was introduced after Jankowicz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/nina-jankowicz-dhs-disinformation-governance-board-right-wing-misinformation-2022-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drafted<\/a> a resignation letter Tuesday. Republican Sen. Ron Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/28\/exclusive-beacon-of-misinformation-sen-ron-johnson-calls-for-answers-from-dhs-over-bidens-disinformation-board-slams-nina-jankowicz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sent a letter<\/a> April 27 to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, saying Jankowicz is a \u201cbeacon of misinformation online\u201d and mentioning that she has published multiple tweets \u201cfurthering the false media narrative\u201d about the Hunter Biden laptop. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/02\/nina-jankowicz-peddled-disinformation-about-steele-dossier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Biden\u2019s New Truth Czar Talks A Lot About \u2018Disinformation Laundering.\u2019 And Here She Is Committing That Very Sin)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/30\/hunter-biden-china-laptop\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/16\/us\/politics\/hunter-biden-tax-bill-investigation.html\">The New York Times<\/a>\u00a0noted the authenticity of Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop in March 2022, more than a year after the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/29\/cybersecurity-expert-authenticates-hunter-biden-burisma-email\/\">verified<\/a>\u00a0it on Oct. 29, 2020. The DCNF obtained a full copy of Hunter Biden\u2019s alleged laptop from former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 2020 and had the emails forensically verified as real.<\/p>\n<p>Just days before the DCNF verified the authenticity of the laptop, Jankowicz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wiczipedia\/status\/1319463138107031553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a> about the laptop, saying it \u201cis a Russian influence op.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/28\/exclusive-beacon-of-misinformation-sen-ron-johnson-calls-for-answers-from-dhs-over-bidens-disinformation-board-slams-nina-jankowicz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Sen. Ron Johnson Calls For Answers From DHS Over Biden\u2019s \u2018Disinformation\u2019 Board, Slams Nina Jankowicz)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden administration\u2019s attempt to alter and control the ideology of truth is undoubtedly a threat to our Constitution, freedom of speech, and our republic,\u201d Donalds told the Daily Caller before the resolution was introduced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe creation of the Disinformation Governance Board \u2014 even with the recently announced temporary pause \u2014 will prove to be volatile and detrimental to civilized political discourse in our nation. I\u2019m proud to join Rep. Joyce in this House Resolution of Inquiry to uncover this administration\u2019s intent of the Board, activities of the Board, and what censorship mechanisms will be put in place when monitoring free-thinking Americans,\u201d Donalds continued.<\/p>\n<p>During the second presidential debate, Jankowicz sent out a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wiczipedia\/status\/1319463138107031553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweet<\/a> which said that Biden cited \u201c50 former natsec officials and 5 former CIA heads that believe the laptop is a Russian influence op.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wiczipedia\/status\/939157661022674948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweet<\/a>\u00a0from December 2017, Jankowicz also claimed the Steele dossier, which has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/12\/09\/doj-watchdog-debunk-dossier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">totally discredited<\/a>, was funded by Republicans. Christopher Steele, the dossier\u2019s author, was never funded by Republicans. The Washington Post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/10\/24\/bombshell-report-clinton-campaign-and-dnc-funded-trump-dossier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0in October 2017 that Marc E. Elias, a lawyer for the Clinton campaign and DNC, and his law firm, Perkins Coie, hired Fusion GPS last April to investigate Donald Trump \u2014 something Jankowicz failed to mention.<\/p>\n<p>The DHS announced the board will be under review and on a \u201cpause.\u201d However, the department hired former DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff and former U.S. Deputy Secretary General Jamie Gorelick under former President Bill Clinton to be the ones leading the review.<\/p>\n<p>Chertoff has <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/02\/three-republicans-vote-against-resolution-supporting-ukraine-rosendale-massie-gosar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reportedly<\/a> pushed disinformation about Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop, putting <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/homeland-security-pick-to-clean-up-disinfo-board-pushed-disinfo-himself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the blame on Russia<\/a>, and Gorelick <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/19\/nina-jakowicz-jamie-gorelick-michael-chertoff-disinformation-governance-board-dhs-patriot-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worked for<\/a> the Clinton administration and was also a member of the 9\/11 Commission. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/19\/nina-jakowicz-jamie-gorelick-michael-chertoff-disinformation-governance-board-dhs-patriot-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: The Clownish Disinfo Czar Got The Boot, But Biden\u2019s \u2018Ministry Of Truth\u2019 Hired Monster Replacements)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jankowicz is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/27\/biden-official-nina-jankowicz-hunter-biden-laptop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">currently a fellow<\/a>\u00a0at the Wilson Center. On her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wiczipedia.com\/about-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>, she calls herself an \u201cinternationally-recognized expert on disinformation and democratization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller contacted DHS and Jankowicz about her resignation and the resolution, to which a\u00a0DHS spokesperson said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDHS created an internal working group called the Disinformation Governance Board to ensure the Department\u2019s disinformation-related work protects free speech, civil rights, civil liberties, and privacy. It was intended to ensure coordination across the Department\u2019s component agencies as they protect Americans from disinformation that threatens the homeland \u2013 including malicious efforts spread by foreign adversaries, human traffickers, and transnational criminal organizations. The Board has been grossly and intentionally mischaracterized: it was never about censorship or policing speech in any manner. It was designed to ensure we fulfill our mission to protect the homeland, while protecting core Constitutional rights. However, false attacks have become a significant distraction from the Department\u2019s vitally important work to combat disinformation that threatens the safety and security of the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo help instill trust in our work, Secretary Mayorkas has asked former DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff and former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick to lead a thorough review and assessment, conducted through the bipartisan Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC). \u00a0This assessment will focus on answering two pivotal questions,\u201d the spokesperson added. \u201cFirst, how can the Department most effectively and appropriately address disinformation that poses a threat to our country, while protecting free speech, civil rights, civil liberties, and privacy. Second, how can DHS achieve greater transparency across our disinformation-related work and increase trust with the public and other key stakeholders. The Secretary has requested the HSAC\u2019s final recommendations within 75 days. During the HSAC\u2019s review, the Board will not convene and its work will be paused, but the Department\u2019s critical work across several administrations to address disinformation that threatens the security of our country will continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jankowicz provided the following statement to the Caller:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter six years dedicated to the study of disinformation and best practices in responding to it, I joined the Department of Homeland Security to be the executive director of the Disinformation Governance Board with the intention of supporting the Department\u2019s important work addressing disinformation that affects the homeland. With the Board\u2019s work paused and its future uncertain, and I have decided to leave DHS to return to my work in the public sphere. It is deeply disappointing that mischaracterizations of the Board became a distraction from the Department\u2019s vital work, and indeed, along with recent events globally and nationally, embodies why it is necessary. I maintain my commitment to building awareness of disinformation\u2019s threats and trust the Department will do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another DHS spokesperson added this statement to the Caller:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Board\u2019s purpose has been grossly and intentionally mischaracterized: it was never about censorship or policing speech in any manner. Quite the opposite: it was designed to ensure we fulfill our mission to protect the homeland, while protecting core Constitutional rights.\u00a0 As its executive director, Nina Jankowicz was subjected to unjustified and vile personal attacks and physical threats. As the Secretary has repeatedly said in Congressional hearings and in media interviews, Nina is eminently qualified to do this work. We know she will continue to be a leader in this field.
