Clubbing is often caused by liver disease or cirrhosis, and is linked to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/news-alcohol-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\">excessive alcohol consumption<\/a>. These muscle contractions <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK535445\/\" target=\"_blank\">could signify asterixis<\/a>, a neurological symptom of chronic liver disease that causes tremors in the hands. This symptom is often called &#8220;liver flap,&#8221; due to the flapping tremor associated with liver disease.<\/p>\n<p>When it is diseased, the liver cannot <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21220-hepatic-encephalopathy\" target=\"_blank\">effectively filter toxins<\/a> from the blood. As a result, they accumulate in the bloodstream and travel to the brain, where they can impair brain function and cause neurological motor control issues in the hands and wrists. This condition is known as <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.org\/rare-diseases\/hepatic-encephalopathy\/\" target=\"_blank\">hepatic encephalopathy<\/a> (HE), and 70 percent of people with liver cirrhosis develop HE symptoms. If you have white fingernails (apart from a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/22890-terrys-nails\" target=\"_blank\">reddish-brown strip<\/a> at the nail tip), see a doctor immediately.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whitening of the nail bed [can be] a sign of liver failure, diabetes, heart failure, thyroid abnormalities, or malnutrition,&#8221; explains <strong>Liudmila Schafer<\/strong>, MD, FACP, a medical oncologist and the founder of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/thedoctorconnect.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Doctor Connect<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s [difficult] to reverse the signs of Terry&#8217;s nails. This symptom involves &#8220;spooning&#8221; of the fingernails, where the edges are raised and scooped outward like a spoon. Spooning of your fingernails could be a sign of hemochromatosis, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hemochromatosis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351443\" target=\"_blank\">a severe liver disorder<\/a> that causes excess iron absorption from food.<\/p>\n<p>If you experience this symptom, see a doctor immediately, as too much iron in the blood can cause life-threatening conditions beyond the liver\u2014including heart disease and diabetes. Treatment for hemochromatosis typically involves removing blood from the body to reduce iron levels.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to resolving symptoms in your hands, Allen says, &#8220;Treatment of the underlying liver issue will significantly improve or completely resolve the symptoms.
